Dispatcher - Transportation Job at Stafford County Public Schools

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Mainstream Transportation Services, the dispatcher is responsible for exercising independent judgment in making decisions regarding citizen concerns/complaints, two-way radio transmissions from bus drivers, and maintaining a roster of substitute drivers and monitors, assigning them to routes as required.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Dispatch Responsibilities

· Respond to and log radio transmissions from bus drivers, following-up as appropriate.

· Dispatches contracted subs to required locations, logging each incident by type, area and time.

· Provides information regarding bus operations to parents, school administrators, law enforcement agencies and assigned drivers and monitors.

· Provides assistance to school administrators and regarding scheduled and unscheduled bus transportation.

· Receives and routes/resolves inquires and complaints.

· Maintains a computerized daily substitution and break down log.

· Prepares and submits the accident notification information and calls the school when an accident occurs.

· Communicates orally and in writing with school system staff, parents and the general public.

· Willing to work flexible hours when other dispatchers are absent or to support special work assignments

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· High school diploma, G.E.D., or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school

· Prior experience as a dispatcher and/or school bus driver preferred

· Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

o School bus transportation and operation processes.

o Geographical knowledge of Stafford County, school locations and highway systems

Skills

o Communicate effectively and efficiently, both orally and written to maintain courteous and tactful communication between parents, school administrators, students, the general public, drivers and assistants.

o Operation of business equipment to include fax machine, copier, two way radio and multiple line phone system.

Abilities

o Work flexible hours, possibly a split shift as needed

o Work on multiple tasks with effectiveness and organizational skill

o Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals

o Organize and perform work independently

o Meet deadlines for all work even when working on multiple projects

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Work environment is primarily inside in an office, with quiet to moderate noise, temperatures that are controlled, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.

· The work is light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.

· The following physical and mental abilities are representative of those expected to complete the essential functions of the job: standing for prolonged periods; sitting for prolonged periods; moving the hands, wrists, or fingers repetitively; moving with force on the back or lower body repetitively; feeling, grasping, or holding objections by hand; identifying colors visually; identifying objects in low light or distant conditions; communicating via spoken language; communicating via written language; perceiving sounds; making decisions using logic and rational thinking.
