Role Overview

The Abbe Center for Jewish Life Director and Hillel Advisor position is a part time salaried position (20 hours per week) with benefits. The position reports directly to the Dean of Spiritual Engagement and Chaplain and will work collaboratively to build relationships with students and serve as a pastoral presence on campus. Working with the Dean of Spiritual Engagement/Chaplain, the Abbe Center Director/Hillel Advisor serves in an institutional role to help plan campus wide programs such as the interfaith baccalaureate and have input regarding the spiritual aspects of other traditions such as the Hobart and William Smith (HWS) opening convocation. They will also develop programming and provide a welcoming presence to students with diverse intersecting identities at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life while working with the Hillel Board to develop programs of interest to students that focus on the Jewish tradition.

The position requires flexibility in a work schedule that will accommodate student needs and programming, including presence at weekly Shabbat Dinners. This is a part-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position; the hours are adjusted to reflect the programming needs. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.

What You’ll Do

  • Organize and execute weekly Shabbat dinners and sharing Jewish teachings at this and other events.

  • Work with the HWS Hillel Board to plan programs for all Jewish holidays and observances, along with events that will reach the campus more broadly such as guest speakers and Bart Mitzvah.

  • In collaboration with campus partners, provide confidential pastoral and spiritual care to both Jewish students and any other student in need of support.

  • Serve on campus committees whose missions connect to student care; this is discerned as the need arises with the Dean of Spiritual Engagement.

  • Collaborate with local Hillel partners (Rochester area, Upstate NY, and the Schusterman International Center) and Hillel colleagues across the movement to stay connected to new initiatives and best practices and make use of resources provided by Hillel International.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities provided by Hillel International and/or other spiritual life organizations.

  • Manage the finances of the Abbe Center for Jewish Life and HWS Hillel.

  • Work with advancement colleagues to raise funds for the Abbe Center for Jewish Life and Hillel Programming; this includes communication with alumni parents and supporters.

  • Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges’ educational philosophy and mission.

  • Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.

  • Performs other related duties as required.
