Position Title: Director, Nutrition Services

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Annual term of employment is 12 months
SUMMARY: Directs the district's food service program in conformance with local, state and federal regulations and requirements including public health and safety. While providing a wholesome, attractive, nutritionally balanced meals prepared under safe and sanitary conditions which appeal to the different age groups in the school system, within a general goal of financial independence for the Nutrition Services Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.- Recommends the employment, assignment and termination of all nutrition services personnel.
- Establishes standards of cleanliness, safety and performance for all nutrition service personnel.
- Plans and supervises preparation and service of all menus.
- Purchases all food and supplies for operation of food service program.
- In cooperation with the purchasing department, prepares specifications and recommends awards on all supplies and equipment forthe nutrition service program.
- Enforces federal and state regulations regarding nutrition of meals, reports, and records. Assures maintenance of records necessary for federal audit.
- Assures that the nutrition service program is operated in accordance with state and federal standards to assure the district of entitlement under the Child Nutrition Program of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
- Requests, reports and prioritizes all equipment maintenance and building repairs necessary to Director of Maintenance & Operations.
- Inspects all nutrition service facilities at regular intervals to ensure thatstandards of quality, preparation and portion control, sanitation and safety and operational procedures are maintained and enforced.
- Works with Chief Financial Officer on organization, planning, pricing, budget and policies for the nutrition service program.
- Cooperates with school administration on all special functions involving nutrition services.
- Within fiscal requirements, works in cooperation with principals, parents and students in developing programs suitable to students taste.
• In cooperation with the Human Resource Office, administers personnel policies for Nutrition Service Department employees. • Evaluates annually all employees directly under his/her supervision.
- Reviews personnel evaluations of all nutrition service employees and assures that all nutrition department managers use appropriate and prescribed procedures for evaluation of their assigned personnel.
- Prepares and administers Nutrition Service Department budget.
- Keep the public informed of the menus and the services offered by the Nutrition Service Department and of health and educational benefits gained by children through participation in this program.
- Consults with administration and architects on plans and specifications for proposed new or remodeled nutrition service facilities.
- Assists principals and teachers, as requested, in instructional phases of the lunchroom program and in classroom units pertaining to nutrition.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ensures all annual updates with the SC Dept of Education Office of Health and Nutrition Services
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor Degree from an accredited institution in institutional/ restaurant management with emphasis on business administration and dietetics desirable. Three years professional and operational experience as department head or manager of a multi-faceted food service establishment. Additions to above qualifications which Chief Financial Officermay find appropriate and acceptable.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Registered Dietitian status preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Working knowledge of quantity food preparation, sanitation principals, menu planning, inventory control, record keeping, and production schedules. Previous experience in food service management. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work in the main office for the Nutrition Services Department located in the District Administrative Office building. Working space is adequate and embodies a busy environment. The daily schedule is hectic, including many meetings, telephone conversations, and electronic mail correspondence. Work hazards are limited and would be accidental in nature. Equipment frequently used include computer, telephone, fax machine, calculator, and photocopy machine. The noise level in the work environment is usually very quiet. The employee is continuously required to meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interact with the public and other staff, and work irregular or extended work hours.
