Minimum Entry Level Qualifications

1. Experience and/or level of competency: Minimum of 2-3 years of leadership experience managing a clinical unit. Clinical experience evidenced by specialty training specific to the nursing area. Progressive nursing leadership experience demonstrating solid management is necessary for this nursing position. The Director of ICU should have the ability to carry out all responsibilities in a thorough and timely manner. Excellent communication (verbal, written), interpersonal, organizational, leadership, exceptional interpersonal relations and problem solving skills required.

2. Academic Preparation: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; Baccalaureate degree or current enrollment in a program. Current State Registered Nursing licensure. Current ACLS and BCLS and certification. CCRN certification preferred. Master’s Degree in health related field preferred.

Job Summary:

Responsible for personnel, capital and operating budgets, and compliance. Reports to CNO and is a liaison to departments, physicians, administration, patients, guests and the community. Department Directors should be visionary as to the opportunities to develop, grow and expand their service line. The following description of duties is intended to outline the essential responsibilities of the person in this position. Specific Responsibilities:

1. Plan, organize and administer work in the ICU by establishing services, policies and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and standard practices of professional organizations within budget and productivity standards to ensure the continuous, accurate, timely and cost effective services are provided.

2. Interpret organizational and departmental policies for staff, analyze and resolve conflicts and initiate plans to motivate staff and achieve work goals. Assure that all staff is properly trained in and oriented to the work environment and have the necessary equipment and supplies to perform their job to attain high quality results and a cohesive work environment. Ensures staff is competent in use of equipment and/or supplies.

3. Performs analysis to include selection, evaluation, and/or recommendations of equipment and supplies for purchase, lease or rental within budget and/or group purchasing contract agreements to ensure adequate resources are available. Completes appropriate forms for major expenditures for approval. Collaborates with CNO and CFO on purchases.

4. Hires staff, completes annual performance evaluations and conducts individual review sessions semi-annually, coach staff to improve work performance and provide high quality service. Review chart audits results for compliance and department opportunities.

5. Attend appropriate hospital committee meetings, conducts monthly departmental meetings, in-services as needed.

6. Develops physician relations. Collaborates with physician liaison on development of physician relations and implementation of growth strategies. Monitors physician satisfaction and implements action plans to improve identified areas of concern.

7. Participates in Performance Improvement activities. Assures performance improvement programs meet regulatory requirements. Identifies opportunities for improvement and departmental efficiencies. Reviews and educates staff on NPSGs. Ensure staff is compliant with processes. Monitor Core Measure metrics. Ensuring staff are aware of requirements and monitors employee satisfaction and incorporates staff into decision making process.

8. Round on newly admitted patients specifically target pain, toileting, position, staff recognition.

9. Address patient/family concerns/satisfaction issues. Inform CNO if appropriate.

10. Actively engage in patient satisfaction.

11. Impacts staff recruitment and retention using various motivational strategies. Speaks positively about the organization and demonstrates positive attitude and behavior in the work environment. Is a change agent for hospital/department initiatives

12. Performs other duties as assigned.
