Who You Are

You are a passionate advocate for public education, students and families. Our success in providing opportunities for students relies on having a sound financial plan and managing the operations of the District in a transparent, efficient and responsible manner. Responsibility for this work is embedded within the roles of each District and school leader. As our Director of Finance and Operations, you will partner with those school and District leaders to advance Acton-Boxborough’s commitment to operational efficiency, sustainability, and responsible financial stewardship. Your presence and expertise will impact all aspects of our District’s goals and strategy as you work with stakeholders to prioritize resources for student learning. In certain areas you will be expected to lead, coordinate and direct the work. In others, you will cnsult and contribute guidance to the efforts for which other colleagues are responsible.

The Director will serve as a resource, guide and strategic planner, helping us to make effective and efficient use of our community’s resources for the benefit of our students and families. You will:

  • Lead the annual budget process
  • Oversee all financial aspects of the District
  • Oversee finance staff including accounts payable, payroll, budget analyst and District accounting
  • Oversee other District programs, including:
  • Transportation
  • Facilities, maintenance (including sustainability efforts) and capital planning
  • Food services
  • Seek grant opportunities and support advocacy efforts for school improvement initiatives
  • Share our commitment to removing barriers and limits that have historically been in place for our underrepresented and marginalized communities.

The Director is a member of the Superintendent’s leadership team, and reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools. You will often find yourself partnering and co-leading efforts with colleagues such as the Deputy Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning, other members of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, and all of the building principals. You will lead a team of talented and dedicated individuals in the finance and operations departments and work directly with the Director of Facilities, Director of Transportation, the Budget Director, Accountant, Treasurer, as well as the Director of Food Services. You will have a dedicated budget to support the work and will have an administrative support position assigned to your office.

You will think about how resource allocation and advocacy impacts students and their families and act to improve outcomes for all of our students. You center the needs of our most vulnerable students and families in your work to allocate resources equitably. You are a passionate advocate for public schools with local, state and national leaders.

You have a strong knowledge base and credentials that prepare you for tackling and leading complicated work: You are deeply knowledgeable and practiced in school finance laws, regulations and guidelines. You possess or will possess appropriate licensure as a School Business Administrator in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. You are involved in professional organizations and advocacy groups for school finance.

You are a creative thinker and look for new and innovative solutions to financial challenges: You enjoy a good challenge, particularly when it comes to the strategic allocation of resources. You can look at a school budget and find ways to allocate or reallocate funding in order to achieve important objectives. You understand and can articulate how resource allocation impacts student achievement and can think critically about the budget in terms of its programs and their outcomes.

You see yourself as a steward of the community’s resources and are an effective communicator: You show deep respect for the contributions our citizens make in support of our schools. You actively communicate the investment in our school back to the community so that stakeholders understand, with transparency, how their tax dollars are used. You are aware of current trends in sustainability with respect to school operations and lead the charge for our District to be a leader in this area. You also understand how to work with limited community resources and actively pursue grants and other revenue generating opportunities to help offset costs.

You are a skilled project manager. You embrace the challenge of synthesizing and executing big picture ideas and have strong strategic thinking and project execution abilities. Your attention to detail and ability to thoughtfully prioritize allows you to share just the right level of relevant information to keep the team’s key priorities on track. You can track multiple projects across departments that include facilities and capital planning, transportation, food services and finance. You develop systems to keep everyone informed and working productively. You model productive sharing and receiving of feedback.

What You’ll Do
As the Director of Finance and Operations, your responsibilities may be supplemented by the Superintendent and include:

District Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and work with Principals and Central Office team to identify important strategic objectives and align resources to achieve them.
  • Coordinate and communicate aspects of District operations, including facilities, maintenance, capital planning, and transportation with building principals and members of the Central Office team.

School Finance

  • In conjunction with the Superintendent of Schools, lead the development of the District’s annual budget proposals
  • Serve as the district’s chief procurement officer, oversee and advise the District on large capital requests, and have the ability to obtain the Massachusetts Chief Public Purchasing Official (MCPPO) license as needed for District purchasing and capital projects.
  • Oversee the finance staff, including two accounts payable staff, two payroll staff, assistant treasurer, District accountant and assistant director of finance.
  • Support principals and department leaders in understanding and managing their budgets, and in making financial decisions that are in the best interest of students and District priorities.
  • Collaborate with the finance staff for the towns of Acton and Boxborough to develop priorities, estimate revenues and expenses and to prepare the Acton-Boxborough Regional District assessment for both towns.
  • Responsibility for internal controls, including state financial reporting and annual audits.

Facilities and Operations

  • Oversee and support the Director of Facilities in their job of hiring and supervising building custodians and maintenance staff.
  • Support the facilities department with Capital Planning for the district’s eight schools.
  • Support the Director of Transportation

School Committee

  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial reports for the School Committee
  • Present budget and financial updates to the School Committee
  • Meet with new School Committee members to support them in learning about the budget and the financial responsibilities of School Committee members.
  • Provide School Committee members with information, when asked, relative to warrants and payment of bills.

Collaboration with Human Resources

  • Work with the Deputy Superintendent and human resources staff to develop information related to hiring, salaries and position control.
  • Prepare reports from the district’s financial system (Munis) related to the cost of salaries and staffing information.
  • Interface with Tyler Technologies to support the sharing of information between Munis’ human resources module, payroll and budget.

Compensation
This is a 12-month, benefits-eligible position. Salary range is $155,000 - $170,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
