TITLE:
Director, Neonatal Clinical Skills Training
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Vice President, Global Newborn and Child Health
BASIC FUNCTION:
Direct the activities of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) neonatal clinical skills training programs along the pathway of evidence generation/research around neonatal resuscitation, evidence evaluation, guideline writing, and development of educational curricula related to neonatal resuscitation and neonatal clinical skills training. Direct strategic planning, innovation and business operations related to the Neonatal Resuscitation Program and other neonatal clinical skills training programs. Identify and cultivate relationships with external funders to support and advance related program activities. Oversee the implementation of studies to validate the scientific effectiveness and educational design of new NRP educational offerings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Establish and implement the strategic plan for neonatal clinical skills training that links to the mission, goals, and objectives of the AAP and department in consultation with key stakeholders & leadership.
2. Oversee and innovate existing neonatal clinical skills training programs including curriculum development, marketing, budgeting, and implementation of innovative technologies to support AAP educational activities.
3. Direct the continued growth of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), including expansion of NRP to international sites through collaborative relationships with the RQI Partners, American Heart Association and Laerdal, as well as new markets domestically and internationally. Oversee the business operations, systems, processes, educational offerings, and customer service initiatives targeting continued growth or revenues.
4. Oversee the development of new curricula and educational offerings related to neonatal resuscitation and neonatal clinical skills training that meet the needs of diverse audiences. Research and evaluate resource impact of prospective new ventures and potential return on investment.
5. Supervise and mentor assigned staff. Encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff. Support ongoing staff development, help set objectives, and evaluate performance, and promote and enhance staff capacity in skills necessary to achieve goals. Ensure staff operate in a fiscally prudent manner, maintain confidentiality, operate with the highest ethical standards, and provide excellent service to members and volunteers.
6. Serve as main staff liaison to the AHA and ILCOR regarding neonatal resuscitation evidence evaluation and guidelines writing. Attend meetings of the AHA/AAP Neonatal Writing Group, ILCOR Neonatal Content Expert Group, and associated committees to ascertain development of new outputs/guidelines and determine how these will interface/impact existing AAP Policy. Oversee recruitment of new writing group members and development of quarterly reports. Foster the AAP/AHA partner relationship to ensure success of our strategic initiatives.
7. Collaborate with Vice President on determining plan of action for review of outputs by AAP Board of Directors and expanding AAP sphere of influence within these groups.
8. Oversee the DRIVE Network and associated AAP staff. Work with Steering Committee to develop processes and procedures for review of potential studies and publications. Collaborate with Vice President to identify potential external funders to support Network activities. Work with Network Principal Investigators to develop strategic plans for expansion and impact and dissemination of results.
9. Analyze processes, work operations, quality records, and other data sources to identify opportunities for improvement and challenges to achieving stated outcomes and develop solutions.
10. Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging trends in health care education, including theory, design, and implementation through networking, literature review, evaluating new methods, and material and professional development opportunities.
11. Develop and oversee assigned budgets, evaluate, and report on variances, and ensure timely submission of required reports for internal and external compliance. Regularly analyze pricing strategies and recommend enhancements for continued revenue growth.
12. Conduct and oversee the development of identified needs assessment and outcome studies. Evaluate results and develop appropriate strategies for addressing needs and learning objectives and practice change and maintenance of competency through curriculum design, instructional methodologies, technology, and administration.
13. Work with staff to analyze customer queries and implement process improvements that positively impact the customer’s experience and increase productivity and service delivery.
14. Design and oversee the implementation of studies to validate the effectiveness and educational design of neonatal clinical skills training programs. Analyze results and make recommendations on how to improve programs and administration to promote practice change and quality improvement.
15. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and contractual requirements including copyright, record retention, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) essentials, and AAP, American Heart Association (AHA), and International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) policies/guidelines/and standards.
16. Lead identified special projects with our alliance partners for advancement and enhancement of learning and quality improvement strategies.
17. Identify potential new partnerships to assist in meeting desired learning objectives and unmet needs of learners. Appropriately vet these organizations and assist in due diligence. Foster integration amongst the multiple partners and organizations.
18. Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in adult education, public health, nursing, allied health, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
At least six years’ progressive related experience in educational development, program development, implementation, and evaluation; and understanding of physiology and medical/clinical practice. Experience identifying funding sources, budget/management development, contract management, and supervising staff required. Experience as a clinical nurse specialist or neonatal nurse practitioner and working within a professional association strongly preferred.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
Excellent decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, organizational, written/verbal communication, diplomacy, interpersonal, and project management skills required. Must be able to lead change initiatives to improve systems, manage complex partner relationships with diplomacy, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, analyze, and interpret business/pricing models and manage budgets, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, supervise/lead staff, think creatively, pay close attention to details, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to diversity. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office, and the ability to learn and apply new technologies to advance work initiatives; experience with web maintenance/collaboration site software (e.g., SharePoint), virtual meeting platforms (e.g., WebEx), and LMS preferred. Fluency in a foreign language is helpful. Travel (domestic and international) and evening/some weekend work required, as well as the ability to be flexible with work schedule to accommodate physician’s availability.
