Job Description
Do you have experience working on heavy equipment? The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for someone who takes charge and has a high standard of workmanship to fill a
Journey Diesel Mechanic position in the Region Four, Cedar City Mechanic Shop.
You will ensure that maintenance vehicles, such as snow plows, are functioning properly and most importantly – safely. While you will work in a shop environment, this position will also travel to different sites throughout the region to help maintain heavy duty trucks and equipment that are unable to be brought into the shop.
Principal Duties
As a Journey Diesel Mechanic, you will:
- Perform mechanic duties including inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting, overhauling, and repairing UDOT equipment.
- Inspect parts for wear, breaks, and defects.
- Use diagnostic testing and calibrating equipment for repairs.
- Transport equipment around Region Four and to the Complex.
- Perform cutting, brazing, and welding as needed.
- Select and order repair parts.
- Complete necessary paperwork to account for parts and labor.
- Operate tools necessary to perform duties of job, including pneumatic tools, power tools, hand tools, and test equipment.
- Road test all equipment before and after repair.
- Maintain equipment records; read and interpret repair manuals.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 60 days.
- A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.
- At least 4 years of directly related professional experience or substitution of directly related education for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
- 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
- Your own full set of mechanics tool (tool allowance provided).
This position may be filled as an Automotive Assistant (pay range $12.91 - $19.35)
for applicants who do not meet the level of work experience for a Journey Diesel Mechanic
.

Preference may be given to those with all-around mechanical abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Some of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are typically associated with the job, though not all-inclusive, include:
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and fellow workers.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment, mechanical operation, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of methods of repairing cars, trucks, and other automotive equipment; proper repair, maintenance, servicing, and record-keeping of automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of mechanical tools and modern diagnostic testing equipment.
- Methods used in a program of preventative maintenance to heavy equipment.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment repair equipment.
- Skilled in hydraulic system diagnosis and repair.
- Ability to assist other journey and apprentice positions with difficult repair problems.
- Ability to pass certification tests and perform safety inspections when required.
- Experience with air brake systems, hydraulics, truck and HD equipment electrical systems, truck and HD engines and drive trains, and truck suspension.
- Principles, theories and practices of automotive repair and/or collision repair techniques.
- Maintain inventory; track receipt, sending, and delivery of materials.
- Use and maintain a variety of hand tools.
- Skills in using parts manuals.
Here is some information you should be aware of:
- This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
- Physical Requirements: Strenuous - The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
- Working Conditions: Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or chemicals, etc.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Director/Group Leader.
