The Dental Health Program Assistant is a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) who assists the Smile Savers Dental Hygienist in the organization and implementation of the Smile Savers Program. The Dental Health Program Assistant works with Yolo County schools to ensure low income students in preschool through 6th grade receive preventive dental care, education, and referrals. This position also assist dentists in clinic with RDA duties, when needed. The Dental Program clients are primarily low income, nonEnglish speaking, DentiCal recipients or uninsured. CommuniCare Health Centers is a Federally Qualified Health Center providing comprehensive patient-centered primary care services including medical, dental, substance abuse treatment, behavioral health and outreach services to low income, multi-ethnic, uninsured and underinsured populations.


SITE/HOURS: 40 hours per week. Schedule needs to be flexible to accommodate school and clinic hours. Travel to different schools/clinics is required. Schedule and hours may vary. (Davis, Woodland, W. Sacramento and Esparto). Some evening hours required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
:

Smile Savers/ Virtual Dental Home (VDH) Duties:

  • Schedule and conduct school Smile Savers/VDH orientation and teacher in-service activities.
  • Schedule and coordinate oral health presentations, dental screenings, dental sealants, and fluoride varnish activities with schools and the Smile Savers/VDH Dental Hygienist.
  • Input data and procedure codes in dental scheduling system.
  • Organize, distribute, and collect program forms and packets to/from parents, teachers and schools in a timely manner.
  • Conduct oral health presentations in preschool through 6th grade classes and to parents and community groups.
  • Maintain all records for the Smile Savers/VDH program, including but not limited to: parent permission forms, teacher packets, fluoride forms, school schedules, referrals, and screening/sealants/varnish data.
  • Attend Dental Program and Health Education and Outreach All Staff meetings on a monthly basis as needed.
  • Assist with dental screenings at the school sites as needed.
  • Organize and order educational and dental supplies for the Smile Savers program, including fluoride, sealants, varnish, toothbrushes, forms and brochures.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Assisting RDH with VDH activities off site or in clinic (including unloading and loading of equipment).
  • Attend necessary trainings/meetings for Smile Savers/VDH program.


Registered Dental Assistant Duties:

  • Perform all duties of a Registered Dental Assistant according to Department of Consumer Affairs, Dental Board of California and Regulations-Chapter 3, Article 5, Section 1086.
  • Attend dentist with four-handed dentistry as needed.
  • Take necessary digital x-rays. Sterilize instruments and clean operatories.
  • Enter treatment plans and charts into electronic dental records.
  • Provide preventative dental education as needed.
  • Apply pit and fissure sealants if certified to do so.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment on a daily basis.
  • Assist with front office and other duties as needed.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: California Registered Dental Assistant license required. Must have x-ray certificate.


Experience/Skills:
Excellent knowledge of dental record keeping and charting. Bilingual Spanish/English required. Intermediate level computer skills required (Microsoft Office and Excel); experience working with electronic dental records helpful/preferred. Must provide proof of current drivers license, auto insurance, current CPR certificate. Candidates must possess a high level of interpersonal and public speaking skills. Organization and reporting skills required. Candidate must be able to communicate and work well with children. Ability to work flexible evening and day hours. Ability to travel throughout Yolo County. Experience working in health education and outreach strongly preferred.

Able to work well with small children. Required to have versatility, flexibility and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm and have acute attention to detail. Expected to have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and follow written/verbal instructions. Required to have the ability to deal effectively with and provide excellent customer service to a diversity of individuals with external customers. COMPLETED COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIRED

Manual dexterity to assist dentist with four-handed dentistry and mix required compounds. Must have the ablility to regularly bend and pivot at the waist. Hearing required for patient assessment. Close and color vision required. Ability to operate office equipment, including computer equipment. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, and walk regularly. The employee must occasionally bend, lift, carry and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to bend, kneel, life, twist, reach with hands and arms. Travel to all agency sites required.
