Description


Lava Hot Springs Foundation properties were deeded to the state of Idaho in 1902 to provide a health and recreation facility. The state built a natatorium in 1918 and now oversees operation of the swimming pools and hot baths through the Lava Hot Springs Foundation. Tyson Koester is the director of the Lava Hot Springs Foundation.

Example of Duties

1. Cleaning/maintenance.
  • Performs heavy-duty cleaning in administrative office, locker rooms, pools, grounds, and lavatories
  • Cleans, sanitizes, and polishes bath, lavatory, shower, and sink fixtures
  • Dusts, washes, sponge mops
  • Sanitizes, and shampoos furniture, woodwork, walls, windows, and glass items
  • Cleans shades and covers on light fixtures
  • Replaces light bulbs
  • Removes waste and debris from areas
  • Selects products and compounds for cleaning jobs
  • Measures and mixes compounds, disinfectants, and sanitizing agents and applies according to procedures or manufacturers' specifications
  • Orders supplies for custodial closets and stocks with paper products, cleaning compounds and similar items
  • Sweeps, strips, seals, and finishes wood, linoleum, and other floors
  • Washes windows in multi-story buildings
  • Removes and prepares draperies for cleaning
  • Removes adhesives, tiles, and carpet
  • Refinishes floors and prepares them for recarpeting or special flooring
  • Instructs temporary help
2. Equipment operation/security.
  • Operates heavy-duty scrubbing, buffing, shampooing, vacuuming, and wet/dry pickup equipment
  • Performs preventive maintenance on cleaning equipment
  • Finishes floors using sanders, strippers, and final finishers
  • Uses snow blowers, hysters, airlift platforms, dollies, and carts
  • Uses specialized sweepers to clean items such as stadium turf
  • Replaces belts, brushes, and bearings in power equipment
  • Insures that floor and building area is secure
  • Verifies doors are locked and lights and appliances are off
  • Reports fire hazards and other emergencies
  • Monitors pools for customer safety and enforces facility rules and policies
3. Miscellaneous.
  • Custodians perform a variety of duties to help insure facilities operate smoothly
  • May include setting-up bleachers, portable flooring, tables, and chairs for special events, providing direction and answering basic questions regarding events for patrons, and setting up and preparing audio/visual equipment and related aids for use
  • Moves furniture, appliances, and similar heavy items
  • Sets-up and climbs ladders and scaffolding
  • Shovels snow from walkways

Minimum Qualifications

Willingness to:

  • Perform duties associated with commercial cleaning, including operating industrial-type cleaning equipment such as high-speed buffers and vacuum cleaners
  • Cleaning restrooms, bath facilities, locker rooms, swimming pools, and similar facilities
  • Moving heavy items such as tables, chairs, and bleachers
  • Repairing the equipment and related devices you operate
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using tools, equipment. materials and common practices used in facility preparation including custodial work
Good knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in heavy-duty custodial work, including related safety practices

About the job:
  • Most work time will be in high traffic areas requiring intensive cleaning and maintenance
  • May include marginally unsafe and/or unpleasant conditions
  • Involves climbing ladders, bending, stooping, lifting and carrying items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds
  • Standing and walking continuously throughout the shift
