Full Salary Range: $38,385 - $63,975 Annually Hiring Range: 38,385 - 46,062 Annually

Work Schedule:
Shift-work. Shifts may include daytime hours, nighttime hours, or both; shifts are 12, 10 and 4 hours. The schedule is comprised of fluctuating workdays [Monday - Sunday] to include some holidays and weekends.

Primary Duties/Brief Description of Work:


Crime Scene Investigators provide investigative documentation, forensic processing services and crime scene analysis. Primary responsibilities are centered upon crime scene response, laboratory examinations and evidence recovery. Duties include forensic assessment of presenting scene and evidence conditions; victim/witness interviews; recognition, collection and preservation of evidence; forensic photography; sketch/diagram preparation and crime scene mapping; chemical and non-chemical processes for recovery of fingerprints, footwear impressions, biological matter/DNA and other trace/transfer evidence; presumptive testing of suspected blood and unknown substances; extensive note taking and report writing; and the provision of court testimony. Technical work is primarily conducted in a field setting and requires sound independent judgement and initiative reflective of best practice and competent service provision. Effective communication (verbal and written) is essential. Position duties are physically and psychologically demanding. Work involves frequent and prolonged exposure to deceased bodies, traumatic injury, chemicals, blood/biological fluids, physical/environmental hazards and inclement weather. Physical demands include, but are not limited to, long periods of standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, climbing, lifting, reaching, pushing/pulling, bending, operating cargo vans and working out of a motor vehicle.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree
    • Or High School Diploma/GED with 1-3 years of Local, State, or Federal Government experience
  • Prior experience with Microsoft Windows Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of biological evidence (blood/DNA), trace/transfer evidence (fiber/hair), latent prints, and firearms evidence
  • Knowledge of technical methods administered for the recognition, documentation, collection, and preservation of evidence;
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree or higher
  • Advanced knowledge or training in specialized fields of forensic analysis associated with bloodstain pattern evidence, DNA, friction-ridge impressions, firearms/tool mark evidence, traumatic injury, and post-mortem artifacts/processes;
  • Division of Criminal Information Network (DCIN) General Certification
  • Certification as a Chemical Analyst through the State of North Carolina
  • International Certification as a Crime Scene Investigator through the International Association for Identification's Board Certification Program.
