Controller Job at Catalyst Family Inc
The Controller leads the Accounting and Finance teams in performing general accounting for the Agency, including but not limited to regulatory, tax, compliance and corporate reporting, fixed assets, cash applications, and budgeting. The Controller ensures timely and accurate financial analysis and reporting, including government reporting, board presentations, financial institution requirements and audit.
The Controller also maintains liaison with multi-functional groups and coordinates with external auditors, banks and financial institutions and other regulatory agencies.
Essential Job Functions:
General Ledger
- Under the direction of the Deputy Director, Finance and Accounting, oversee all general ledger functions and maintains a complete understanding of chart of accounts, contracts and general ledger structure.
- Manages timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end and fiscal year-end accounting close processes.
- Ensures sound accounting practices and controls to support the business operations and ensure compliance with GAAP, FASB, and OMB policy and instructions.
- Oversees accounting processes; researches, recommends and implements system changes and improvements for best practice.
- Prepares and updates revenue and cost allocation.
- Works with contracts to ensure proper and timely reporting of state and federal reports.
- Prepares monthly general ledger journal entries, allocations, and account reconciliations.
- Coordinates annual budget process and directs monthly P&L and variance reporting.
Financial Reporting
- Manages financial reporting requirements for requirements and external agencies.
- Ensures timely and accurate reporting of monthly, quarterly and annual financial information.
Tax Reporting
- Ensures all aspects of tax reporting are filed timely and accurately including IRS Form 990.
- Coordinates with tax professionals and regulatory agencies.
Audit
- Directs all financial audits, including internal reviews and follow-up on audit results.
- Ensures relevant policies are documented and communicated to the responsible owners.
Financial Policies, Systems and Strategy
- Develops accounting policies and procedures to support effective business operations.
- May lead the development and implementation of accounting systems.
- Provide to the Deputy Director, Finance and Accounting financial guidance and advice on operational strategies, performance metrics, and financial challenges and opportunities to support the company's growth.
- Drive strategic financial leadership with oversight and protection of the assets and financial integrity of the organization.
Team Management
- Provides technical guidance and leadership to own team as well as other Managers and Functions on issues relating to accounting and financial activities and dependencies.
- Foster a client service culture and instill a work ethic that includes collaboration.
Education and Experience:
- BA/BS in Accounting or Finance or equivalent; CPA is desirable.
- Minimum of 8 to 10 years experience in accounting at a professional level.
- Minimum of 5 to 7 years in supervision or management of an accounting team.
- Experience working with medium and large company accounting systems, non-profit experience is a big plus.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB and Nonprofit accounting standards including restricted accounting.
- Strong in internal control practices and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Good leadership and supervisory skills.
- Team player, strong interpersonal skills, ability to work across all functions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate complex financial issues to non-finance groups.
- Expert level PC and Excel skills.
