Role

The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office has an opening for a deputy county attorney in its civil division. The selected person has the option to work remotely from home, in the office full-time, or a hybrid arrangement. Salary range is $74,013.86 (entry level) to $132,784.78 (highly experienced) depending on experience. Experience in such practice areas as Arizona government practice, civil litigation, procurement, transactional work, public health, real estate, mental health, public fiduciary, education, aviation, or other county government related law is preferred, but not required. Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of Arizona.

Under close supervision, provides professional legal services of moderate difficulty; provides other legal services as required or assigned.

Major Duties, Responsibilities

  • Initiates and engages criminal prosecution, and/or initiates, engages, and defends civil litigation, which include investigating facts, analyzing facts, applying legal knowledge, planning trial strategy, consulting with parties and expert and lay witnesses, and negotiating and resolving litigation prior to trial. Conducts criminal and civil trials on behalf of county, and represent county at administrative and other hearings.
  • Advises county departments as clients and various law enforcement agencies on civil and criminal matters.
  • Performs legal research and drafts, reviews and prepares legal documents including motions, petitions, opinions and demands.
  • Drafts, reviews and prepares appeals and post conviction relief proceedings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Expectations:
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of county, state and federal law, rules of evidence, criminal and/or civil rules of procedure, administrative rules, rules of court, and office policy and procedure.
  • Exercises appropriate decision making and discretion when advising clients, negotiating and resolving litigation, including the ability to determine alternative courses of action.
  • Drafts organized legal documents, using proper punctuation and grammar.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle large volume of cases and/or clients, meet deadlines and prepare for meetings, court proceedings, hearings and trials.
  • Consistently maintains effective working relationships with civil clients, county departments, law enforcement representatives, victims, other employees, the courts, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:
Prior legal experience helpful.

Education:
Graduation from an accredited law school, admission to the State Bar of Arizona.

Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to analyze and organize factual information and make persuasive legal arguments.

Other Skills:
Ability to remain in sitting position for extended periods of time.
