Chief Finance & Operations Officer Job at THE CHAPIN SCHOOL
Overview
Founded by Maria Bowen Chapin in 1901, The Chapin School is an all-girls Kindergarten through grade 12 independent day school located in New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood dedicated to the intellectual and personal growth of young women. All Chapin students attend school under one roof, creating a unique sense of continuity and community. Here, students benefit from some of the finest, state-of-the-art facilities in New York including a two-story library with a multimedia room, leading-edge science laboratories, art and music studios, a black box theater, computer laboratories, a design and innovation lab, and a greenhouse. Most recently in May 2021, the School’s campaign contributed to significant enhancements to the campus with the expansion of three new floors built atop the 8th floor featuring a new performing arts center, gymnasium, fitness center, a suspended track, locker rooms, offices, and a training room. In addition to the state-of-the-art athletic facilities, the new space includes a fenced-in rooftop turf field and playground.
Since its inception, Chapin has upheld its historic commitment to offering the most challenging academic curriculum while also teaching social, emotional, and life skills that set the stage for students’ success in this century. Guided by its motto, Fortiter et Recte, Chapin considers bravery, compassion, service, and respect for self and others to be fundamental values. While these core values envisioned by Miss Chapin remain as important as ever, there is a new premium on the ability to communicate, to use and manage information, to collaborate in diverse teams, and to think critically and creatively about issues and problems. The school’s educational plan is designed to strengthen these capacities and to ensure, as before, that Chapin graduates leave with a lifelong love of learning, resiliency, perseverance, and an understanding of the value of helping others. The school is committed to diversity in its culture, curriculum, and program and aims, always, to create an inclusive and equitable community.
The Chapin School is seeking a seasoned professional to become Chief Finance & Operations Officer (CF&OO), assuming the role in July 2023. Reporting to the Head of School, the CF&OO serves as leader of Chapin’s finances and operations, acts as a strategic thought partner to both the Head and the Board of Trustees, and collaborates with colleagues as a member of the senior administrative team. Chapin is searching for a goal-oriented senior leader who will respect and embrace the culture and values of the institution and will honor the operational pace of a highly regarded, longstanding and innovative institution with high standards and expectations of its community.
Challenges and Opportunities
Chapin’s next Chief Finance and Operations Officer is charged with leading the school’s financial and operations programs. They will be responsible for overseeing the annual budgeting process, conducting financial modeling to ensure the school’s stable financial future, maintaining and enhancing campus facilities, and identifying opportunities to advance Chapin’s mission via sound and strategic financial planning. The CF&OO reports to Chapin’s Head of School Suzanne Fogarty, partners closely with the Associate Head of School, other senior administrators and the Board of Trustees and oversees both the school’s Business Office and operations.
The CF&OO will be welcomed to a school with much to celebrate, both programmatically and financially. The school experiences healthy enrollment, with continued demand in the competitive NYC marketplace. Philanthropy is also thriving at Chapin. The school’s annual giving program contributes over $4m to the operating budget. Their most recent capital campaign, Building Chapin’s Future, raised over $100 million for a transformational campus project that supported Chapin’s programmatic objectives while bolstering community connections through the design of creative and thoughtful spaces for students of all ages. The expanded campus provides opportunities to grow Chapin’s auxiliary programming on a 12-month basis. Chapin’s endowment is healthy and provides significant income on an annual basis, supporting programs, faculty compensation, and financial aid.
Leading the business office, the CF&OO will work alongside a strong team of dedicated professionals with long tenures. The CF&OO will provide leadership to her/his colleagues, who are eager for mentorship, advocacy, and clear communication. Beyond the team in the Business Office (Controller and Director of Financial Aid, Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable/Business Associate), the CF&OO will also include the Director of Facilities, the Director of Safety and Security, and the Director of Auxiliary Programs as direct reports.
Beyond the named employee oversight, the CF&OO will engage in numerous collaborative projects with colleagues. In partnership with the Director of Technology, the CF&OO will be charged with the assessment and management of Chapin’s cyber risk policies, planning, and investing on an ongoing and proactive basis. This next person will also oversee, with the Director of Technology, the evaluation of school database systems and partner with departments to identify opportunities for streamlined collaboration. Working closely with the Director of Human Resources and the Head of School, the CF&OO will examine school policies and industry data to ensure Chapin’s continued commitment to competitive and equitable compensation for their professional community.
The CF&OO works closely with Chapin’s Board of Trustees, serving as the school’s liaison to the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committees. Chapin’s Board is composed of talented, dedicated alums and parents who honor the school’s mission and advance the institution through strategy and planning. They are eager to partner with the next CF&OO, who will be a thoughtful and careful steward of the school’s financial assets, including the endowment.
