Position Summary:

The Certified Pharmacy Technician, under the direct supervision of staff pharmacists, assists in the processing, preparing, dispensing, and delivering of medication orders. This support includes functions performed in the pharmacy unit dose, intravenous admixture, and bulk stock areas. All work performed will be reviewed, checked, and approved by pharmacists prior to leaving the pharmacy. Innovations improve work procedures and methods and primarily result in some time and cost savings. The job duties affect direct patient care through the completion of tasks which allow others to provide direct care. Work requires internal contacts outside the work group to resolve mutual problems and to collaborate on work procedures. Responsible for ensuring that satisfaction and service with internal contacts is maintained. Contact with external contacts involves providing or getting factual information. Requires normal courtesy and tact in dealing with others.

Education:

  • High school education or equivalent is required.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year hospital or institutional Pharmacy Technician experience.
  • Internal candidates without the one (1) year experience may be considered if they have an outstanding performance evaluation and record.
  • Completion of pharmacy provided orientation and training and demonstrated competence in knowledge, skills, and abilities is required within sixty (60) days of hire date under minimal supervision.

Licensure/Certification

  • Registered in the State of Maryland as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • National certification from a Maryland Board of Pharmacy approved program: Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT), Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT), National Health Career Association (NHA), or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 90 days of hire.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of hospital and institutional pharmacy practice is required.
  • Knowledge of Pyxis requirements. Responds to “stock-outs” and units’ Pyxis needs.
