Summary:

The Behavior Assistant/Youth Care Counselor duties are under the direct supervision and guidance of the Classroom Teacher, during school hours. In Education, he/she/they would assist in the implementation of each student’s school program. When working in the residential units, he/she/they will be supervised by the Youth Care Supervisor for that unit. The job entails supervising youth in normal routines, life skills, guidance in personal hygiene, recreational activities, and life skills. Capability to restrain a youth when necessary, is a condition of this job.

Duties and responsibilities:

· To assist in program preparation to meet the individual needs of each student

· To assist in maintaining an environment that is conductive to learning by following established routines and schedules

· To assist the teacher in maintaining classroom records.

· To supervise and monitor student behavior at all times

· To handle all disturbances within the classroom

· To be a therapeutic agent using counseling and parenting skills, to structure and coordinate the entire daily routine of each youth.

· Be responsible for, and provide care and treatment for each youth at all times.

· Supervise meal times, including lunch during the school week.

· Know where youth are at all times.

· Record pertinent information in the daily log and write incident reports at the end of each shift

· Adhere to the Harmony Hill School code of ethics.

· Be sensitive to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

· School day hours will be from 7:00am-3:00pm. Assist in the classroom until lunchtime.

· Non- school day hours can be from 7:00am-3:00pm or from 3:00pm-11:00pm.

· Will be required to work one major holiday, Thanksgiving or Christmas.

· May request to take holidays off, as approved by the Youth Care Director.

· Only 50% of PTO time can be utilized during school vacation periods, unless approved by the Youth Care Director.

Preferred qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree
  • Current credentials by the Rhode Island Department of Education and Approved Teacher Assistant Certification.
  • Prior experience working with youth with emotional issues.
  • Experience and or training in a human service field/mental health is required.
  • Experience working with at-risk youth in an educational or therapeutic setting is preferred. Experience in trauma informed care a plus.
  • Good communication, interacting well with others in a team environment, understanding and following rules and directions from supervisor.
  • All training is available on site. Must be able to pass our physical intervention –Safety Care training.
  • All candidates must clear Rhode Island state as well as federal background checks.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Must have a valid, non-suspended, non-expired driver license and a good driving record.
  • All employees are required to have the COVID-19 vaccination series completed prior to thier start date.
