Job Description
What You’ll Be Doing:
The Syndications Team within the Innovation Banking Division of CIBC is responsible for working alongside the regional deal teams performing both transaction and portfolio management functions with a specific focus on managing lending partner relationships. Innovation Banking clients are backed by institutional investing firms ranging in size from Series A to publicly listed within technology and healthcare verticals. The syndications group covers the entire portfolio of companies with a specific focus on the technology space.
Transaction Specific:
  • Support team members with initial deal review and advise the regional teams on deal strengths and weaknesses from a syndication perspective.
  • Assist in advising and structuring deals with a focus on meeting the client’s needs while also balancing the needs of lending partners.
  • Create deal summaries and preliminary diligence materials that quickly educate lenders on the most important aspects of the deal.
  • Conduct initial lender outreach and deal review calls with lenders.
  • Manage the organization of diligence materials, the flow of diligence to lenders, and the scheduling and execution of deadlines for all stakeholders including sponsors, management teams, and lending partners.
  • Develop an understanding of credit strengths and limitations of lending partners.
  • Assist the underwriting team with a range of tasks.
Portfolio Management Specific:
  • Work alongside deal teams to manage the data room for CIBC agented deals.
  • Work with the Agency Services / Loan Servicing team to ensure lending partners receive timely payments and overall communication.
  • Internally track syndicated portfolio data and generate reports for management.
How You’ll Succeed
The trading room environment is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring Associate to effectively process information in the course of executing transactions in a constantly changing market environment. Successful candidates will need to adapt to these conditions with creativity, energy and an entrepreneurial spirit in order to meet the evolving demands of the marketplace.
Associate will need to be effective communicators capable of building relationships both internally and with clients. As an Associate, you will have the responsibility of providing detailed analytical, financial modeling, structuring, research and transaction support to senior professionals in your business, helping to win business and execute transactions.

You can demonstrate experience with:
  • At least 2+ years of experience in finance. Venture-backed, public company or life science/healthcare banking experience is a plus.
  • BS/BA Degree in Finance, Statistics, Math, Economics; MBA a plus, CFA a plus.
  • The ability to conduct investment analysis memorandums utilizing both traditional financial information and business behavior characteristics is required.
  • Experience in underwriting business credit.
  • Must be able to work independently and quickly gain thorough knowledge of CIBC’s business banking operations.
  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills, and excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication, and facilitation skills to lead meetings or interviews with subject matter experts and other project contributors or stakeholders.
  • Must be able to collaborate with all related business partners internally and externally.
  • Software: Demonstrated proficiency working with computers and Microsoft Office applications (specifically, Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Nice to have or willingness to learn:
  • Understanding the full life cycle of a technology startup from garage/idea phase to public company.
  • Working knowledge of the venture capital ecosystem.
  • Ability to navigate and interpret a complex cap table.
  • Working knowledge of Syndtrak software

Work Location
Candidate is expected to spend approximately half of the working hours in the office located in downtown Durham, NC. The job will have limited, but some business related travel.
