The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s [MIT] Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the MIT Center for Real Estate (CRE), both located in MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P), seek applicants for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in: Real Estate Finance.

The position: Full-time appointment at the level of assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate professor (without or with tenure), commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications.

Background: The MIT Center for Real Estate at MIT has a long tradition of scholarship in real estate economics and finance. The Center established the first Master of Science degree program in Real Estate Development in the United States, launched in 1984. Based in the School of Architecture & Planning and now in its fourth decade, the MIT/CRE has been an influential leader in scholarship bridging between Academia, Private Industry and Government for the advancement of the global real estate industry and the contribution of that industry to the quality and sustainability of the built environment. In keeping with MIT’s ethos of harnessing technology to make the world better, the Center’s scholarly tradition is interdisciplinary, spanning and synergizing across economics, finance, design, policy, management, law, technology, and engineering. An appreciation of how environmental sustainability and social justice can enhance the built environment is a hallmark of the MIT/CRE’s intellectual tradition.

Job description and Qualifications: With a faculty appointment based in the Department of Urban Studies & Planning (DUSP), the MIT Center for Real Estate is seeking to appoint a full-time faculty member, at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate professor (without or with tenure), to teach and conduct research in real estate finance, economics, sustainability, and related fields. The ideal candidate will have conducted research in one or more areas of the real estate field. The candidate should have a scholarly sensibility to engage in team teaching and team research with scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds including economics and finance, urban planning and design, engineering, technology and innovation, business and management, and law. The person hired will be expected to teach master’s degree students, as well as undergraduate and PhD students.

Three substantive areas of research and teaching expertise of particular interest to CRE include:

  • Real estate finance and investment with a particular interest in commercial property and/or the real estate development process;
  • Urban and real estate economics with a particular strength at the intersection of real estate space and capital markets;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to incorporate environmental sustainability and social justice into the traditional real estate finance and economics framework.

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree required (or expected to complete the Ph.D. by the time of taking this position), as well as publications, teaching and research experience.
