Foundation for Foster Children - Job Description Advocate

STATUS: Full time. Salaried. Exempt. 40-hour work week on average

DEPARTMENT: Youth Programs

REPORTS TO: Senior Advocate

DIRECT REPORTS: Designated Interns and Volunteers
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  • Fingerprinting and background check are required. Must clear all background checks.
  • Reliable transportation; current driver’s license; FL State driver insurance coverage required.
  • Evening and weekend availability may be required for visits and special events with youth, trainings, community events, etc.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Advocate focuses on strengthening the independence and supporting the individual goals of foster youth ages 14-24 throughout Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. The Advocate develops and maintains ongoing relationships with youth and provides advocacy, planning and coaching to ensure each youth receives personalized support to achieve success. The Advocate role requires daily driving to complete coordinated visits and activities with youth.
RESPONSIBILITES (Include, but are not limited to): YOUTH SUPPORT

  • Manage an assigned cohort of youth, utilizing evidenced-based FFC program models
  • Coach/mentor youth on problem solving, self-advocacy, self-determination, academic mindset, self-regulation, persistence, and positive behavior.
  • Provide information, referrals, linkages, and advocacy to assist youth in accessing services and resources.
  • Schedule and facilitate interagency meetings, negotiate services, facilitate transportation plans, assist with addressing barriers to success
  • Organize and/or facilitate monthly workshops/activities for youth which increase knowledge and help to build self-sufficiency
  • Systematically evaluate and define the needs of youth through communication and effective ongoing relationships with the youth, case manager, caregiver, school staff, and other service providers and monitor progress on goals.
  • Monitor ABC (Attendance, Behavior and Course Completion) risk factors and facilitate immediate interventions to address risks as necessary.
  • Assess each youth using measurement tools provided by Program Manager.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Work collaboratively with community and child welfare collaborators to establish support and resources
  • Assist with community outreach and recruitment to grow the resource network for youth in target age range.

DATA MANAGEMENT

  • Regularly maintain complete, accurate and timely records for each youth in program database.
  • Complete monthly program data report to track youth outcomes
  • Provide formal reports to supervisor, case managers and caregivers on an established reporting schedule.
  • Acquire consent forms, collect records, and administer required pre/post tests on schedule. Provide any written records to all relevant parties.
  • Maintain a database of relevant community resources, including individuals and companies with specialty skills that may be used in support of youths’ needs.
  • Collect, record, analyze and track program outcome and follow-up activities including pre and post assessments, thank you letters and photos.
  • Analyze program data to improve the program based on feedback from participants.
  • Assist in the collection of youth photos and success stories

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Attend professional conferences/seminars/meetings as requested
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years professional experience providing advocacy support services to foster youth or youth from other vulnerable populations.
  • General knowledge of educational and community resources available to promote educational attainment for youth.
  • General knowledge of non-profit industry structure and functions- preferred.
  • General knowledge of Metro Orlando’s social welfare systems- preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to discern priorities from secondary responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with people with varying personalities and development levels.
  • Demonstrated success providing support services to youth and caregivers from diverse and traditionally underserved populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to set boundaries when working with youth with an emphasis on problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain records and data to support effective evaluation processes and analysis, and use program data to inform decision making and service delivery strategies.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Experience with Microsoft and Office Suite and other data management systems required.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.).

WORKING CONDITIONS: Some of the work is performed in the FFC offices, which are well lighted and adequately ventilated. The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate. Transportation to and from offsite locations is required, which will result in exposure to temperature changes. Conditions at off-site locations will vary considerably.’

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Mental effort – use of listening, critical thinking and problem solving skills when interacting with employees, volunteers, donors, clients and community members. Ability to multi-task.
  • Physical Requirements – long periods of driving, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and down stairs, talking on the phone, working with office/computer equipment, attending meetings, and sitting at desk or table while listening, talking and taking notes. Standing during meetings as presenter and/or facilitator. Able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
