The Opportunity
The Accommodation Specialist works with students who require accommodations for a documented disability or diagnosis. Primary responsibilities are in direct service and outreach (by phone and email), and using independent judgment and general direction with designated administrative responsibilities. The goals for the Online Accessibility Center are to ensure student's understanding of the available services and resources, receive appropriate accommodations and support and to improve student success within the population supported.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Support a fluctuating caseload of students with documented disabilities through phone and email communication. Maintain accurate records of all student interactions in appropriate technology systems.
  • Interpret comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations and medical documentation presented by students to assess students' needs and determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations following federal law. Review and maintain student documentation, updating promptly.
  • Provide support to students receiving academic accommodations throughout the term, assisting with challenges, and providing coaching to assist students in becoming self-determinant and successful self-advocates.
  • Having the ability to utilize multiple systems and reports to best support students.
  • Educate faculty, staff, and students on university resources, disability accommodations, and federal laws and policies (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008).
  • Help implement specialized programs with other offices (e.g., workshops with Admission, Academic Advising and Career Advising, academic assistance programs within the Writing Center, new adjunct, and full-time faculty).
  • Work with designated personnel to assist students with adaptive technology needs and environmental modifications.
  • Collaborate with ADA/504 Coordinator and university partners on disability related policies and projects.
  • Commencement ceremony work is required twice a year.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Years of experience: 3+ years professional experience supporting people with disabilities.
  • Degree(s): Bachelor's degree counseling, special education, rehabilitation counseling, or related field.
  • Professional Certification(s): N/A
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and tasks at once.
  • Experience with a broad range of disabilities in adolescents and adults.
  • Knowledge of technology specific to accommodating students/employees with disabilities, (e.g., document reader, voice recognition, word prediction, graphic organizer).
  • Strong technology skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of disability laws as they pertain to higher education and students with disabilities including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mobility, sensory, learning, attention, psychiatric, and medical disabilities.
  • Ability to build relationships with students. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to calmly de-escalate difficult situations.
  • Strong attention to detail and strong organization skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field
