The Academic Success Coach helps students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college. These include academic and career goal setting, learning strategies, time management and organization, self-regulation, and self-efficacy. Responsibilities may include one-on-one meetings and small group sessions with students, supervision of tutoring programs, and collaboration with other student-facing departments including faculty, athletic staff, counseling services and enrollment to ensure student success and persistence in ACU's academic programs. The Academic Success Coach must display a commitment to the unique Christian mission and vision of ACU to Transform Culture with Truth through person-to-person mentorship and discipleship. This is a five-year, Department of Education grant funded position.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Minimum of (2) years of job-experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Teaching or administrative experience at the college level
  • (2) years of job-experience in tutoring, counseling, or other student support services

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of coaching, instructional, and mentoring techniques
  • Knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities
  • Knowledge of traditional and online course practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of trends, issues, and accepted practices relevant to the position

Skills:

  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Abilities:

  • Ability to balance multiple demands and effectively organize and manage time and tasks
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community

Typical Duties (The following duties are those typically required to do the job but are not intended to include all duties that comprise the job content. Typical duties are intended to illustrate the diverse and levels of difficulty of the job.)

  • Fosters persistence and completion by maintaining a caseload of first-time in college and/or transfer students
  • Monitors progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings, proactive outreach and communication, and responds to students' questions, concerns, and needs
  • Conducts academic coaching through individual or group sessions that help students assess their performance and develop academic success plans
  • Assists students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success; works with students to learn strong time management and organization skills; motivates students to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success
  • Helps students in identifying, developing, and implementing learning strategies and study skills specific to course materials
  • Refers students to appropriate academic personnel and support resources and collaborates with others to monitor and accelerate the academic progress of the students referred
  • Represent the University as a member of the Title V project and performs other duties appropriate to the position

Working Conditions:

  • Requires the ability to read, write, see, hear, and speak clearly
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, reach or sit for long periods of time
  • Requires working on a computer, PC or laptop; ability to work these and office related equipment
  • May be required to lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables in situations where only a limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Commitment to ACU's faith statement, mission, and purposes and an active Christian faith
  • Comfort and familiarity with the practice of praying with and for others, including students, faculty, and fellow University staff
  • The ability to meaningfully support and encourage students and staff from a biblical worldview perspective, using relevant and applicable references from the Old and New Testaments and orthodox Christian writings
