The Opportunity
This opportunity is for a Youth Entrepreneurship Manager, based in Elmira, NY. This position will report directly to the Program Director.
The Youth Entrepreneurship Manager will have an exciting opportunity to participate in the design, implementation, execution and assessment of an entirely new program to introduce youth to entrepreneurship.
The youth entrepreneurship program will target 15 high school sophomores and juniors who would otherwise not have any exposure to an entrepreneurial mindset, academic and career opportunities. These students will be part of a six-week summer program and will spend half their time in a classroom setting, learning the basics of starting a business using the business model canvas, with the other half of their time dedicated to industry visits, academic visits, and shadowing opportunities. Over the course of the summer, they will develop their business ideas and then present a pitch to judges from the community at the conclusion of their summer program. The Youth Entrepreneurship Manager will work closely with the Project Director and three college mentors.
This summer program will be the culmination of preparation throughout the school year in which the Youth Entrepreneurship Director will be working with the Elmira School District to recruit students by involving school administration and faculty. They will also be coordinating industry and academic tours.
Key responsibilities
- Develop a strong year-round working relationship with the Elmira City School District.
- Working with school administration, recruit disadvantaged students to be active and committed participants in the program.
- Work with partners in the region to plan and execute visits to academic institutions and industry.
- Interact with other community stakeholders to keep them informed on the program and its results.
- Participate and successfully complete training in business model canvas and entrepreneurial training.
- Maintain metrics for student results.
- Manage the implementation of this program with a specific focus on community engagement and relationship building
- Develop solid relationships with program participants, monitoring outside pressures that might interfere with their program participation
- Recruit and train college mentors.
- Act as primary facilitator for classroom teaching, working with college mentors and other IW program staff.
- Organize field trips and shadowing experiences.
- Assess first year of program, review curriculum, plan for subsequent year.
- Assist in finding sponsors to maintain and grow program, telling the story to potential supporters.
Key skills and capacities
- Prior experience in working with young people, as a teacher, social worker, counselor, or other
- Business development -experience as an entrepreneur is a plus—an entrepreneurial mindset.
- Self starter attitude
- Interested in supporting startups, communities, and economic development
- Excellent project management skills.
- Comfortable meeting, engaging, and building relationships with youth—and the ability to meet them where they are.
- The ability to work with people with diverse backgrounds
- Good grammar, language, and communications skills
- Appreciation for teamwork and the mutual feedback, support for required to be part of dynamic team.
- Well-organized with attention to detail.
Qualifications
- Work experience: 5-10 years of work experience that will translate well to the key responsibilities
- Education: Bachelor’s degree, or some significant work towards a post-secondary degree
