ORGANIZATION
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION
Vandenberg Air Force Base is a 98,400 acre base located approximately 9 miles northwest of Lompoc, California. Vandenberg AFB is a Department of Defense space and missile testing base, with a mission of placing satellites into polar orbit from the West Coast using expendable boosters. Vandenberg is located on California’s “Central Coast”. The 150 square mile area midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles is surrounded by the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Pacific shore, and ranches of northern Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. The land here juts further into the Pacific than any point in California, receiving moderate rainfall, daily fog and no snow. The hills are green in winter and turn a burnished gold in summer.

Position Summary
Up to two positions are available. Incumbents will be a member of a Wildland Fire Support Module for the U.S. Air Force Wildland Fire Branch based at Vandenberg AFB, CA. The Wildland Support Module is responsible for implementing fuels treatments including mechanically manipulating vegetation operating heavy equipment, prescribed burns and responding to wildfires on Air Force and adjacent cooperator property throughout the area of responsibility. These positions are located at Vandenberg AFB, CA.

This position requires work on active military training ranges with potential risk for unexploded ordnance and other related hazards. In addition, regular travel (up to 15 weeks per year) to other Air Force installations to perform similar tasks throughout the area of responsibility is required.

Required Job Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
  • A minimum of 6 months of work experience in wildland fire management. The successful completion of an associate’s degree or certification from an accredited training program that provides wildland fire familiarity may be substituted for the experience requirement.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license if deemed necessary.
  • Completed the preliminary requirements for the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards for Fire Fighter Type 2 (S-130, S-190, ICS-100, L-180, IS-700) and able to complete work capacity test at arduous level.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Two or more year’s work experience in fire management
  • Currently qualified as a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2, including arduous level work capacity test.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment in wildland fire and forestry practices is desired.
  • Experience with prescribed fire and wildfire suppression.
  • Familiarity with ecosystems and fire regimes of California is highly preferred.
  • Experience with GIS software (including Avenza) and GPS is beneficial.
  • Degree in natural resource management or related field.

Duty/Responsibility
Technically implements aspects of the fuels treatment prescription, ensuring that preparation, ignition, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation are completed to the specified standards. Monitors fire behavior, evaluates fire effects, identifies potential problems and makes recommendations. Supports wildfire suppression efforts in initial attack and in follow-up actions to safely and effectively control wildfires in accordance with the identified appropriate management response. Operates and maintains equipment to support firing operations and suppression activities such as chainsaws, and firing devices. Operates and maintains a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, and crew members. As qualified, operates and maintains specialized equipment to support firing operations and suppression activities such as UTV’s and water delivery systems (engines and portable pumps). Will meet and maintain National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. As qualified, operates and maintains specialized heavy equipment and attachments utilized for mechanical manipulation of hazardous fuels, invasive & non-native species and to construct fuel breaks and fire lines including masticators, deck mowers, turbo saws (hot saw) and mulchers.

Incumbent will assist implementing land management plans which may include timber marking, T&E monitoring and road work. Other duties assigned to this position will include compiling and utilizing environmental and ecological data, collecting data in post burn areas, and ensuring that information collected gets turned in to proper personnel to be incorporated into a database. The incumbent may assists with completing wildfire suppression rehabilitation, prescribed fire monitoring (pre/post burn) and other related tasks.
