Position overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated Radioactive and Mixed Waste Technician Lead with extensive experience in the management of radioactive and mixed as indicated in the responsibilities listed below. In this position, you will be joining our Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Division and working with the Radiation Protection (RP) Department. Members of this team support radioactive and mixed waste materials management, and waste management functions critical to SLAC’s scientific research and operational mission.
Working under general supervision, you will be responsible for performing tasks associated with the management of radioactive and mixed waste to fulfill SLAC’s mission, vision and values while maintaining regulatory compliance. You will also work with laboratory managers/personnel, waste generators, outside vendors/contractors and other ES&H personnel. As a member of the RP team, you will be reporting to the Radioactive Waste Management Group Leader..
Note: SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Under general supervision, manage radioactive and mixed waste generated onsite in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations, and SLAC/Department of Energy (DOE) policies and procedures. (NOTE: the words/phrase “waste” applies to all classes of waste, unless indicated otherwise)
- Pick up radioactive and mixed waste from laboratories, shops, offices, and designated waste accumulation areas. Majority of routine waste to be picked up will be in containers of various sizes, and types. Laboratory waste and non-routine waste may need to be placed into containers. Verify the composition and labeling accurately represents the waste being picked up. Perform basic segregation and packaging in accordance with on-site transportation requirements. Involves routine and frequent heavy labor tasks.
- Deliver empty containers (i.e., metal, poly drums, boxes, pails, etc.) of various sizes/dimensions to generators as needed. Some containers used to store bulk waste (i.e., drums, waste boxes, etc.) will require use of forklift.
- Perform processing of waste brought into the centralized radioactive and mixed waste storage area, including physical inspections, consolidating, and weighing. Properly mark, label, and segregate wastes accepted into the facility.
- Package and prepare wastes for shipment to off-site treatment/disposal facilities in accordance with RWM procedures, the offsite facility packaging guidelines and Department of Transportation (DOT) shipping requirements. Label and mark waste shipping containers.
- Ensure that the waste data is properly entered into the inventory Database in a timely manner.
- Perform quality control inspections of all shipping inventory sheets, manifests, and other associated documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Escort transportation subcontractors to and from various job sites, mainly construction where waste is being generated in bulk (i.e. disposal projects).
- Inspect areas where waste is being generated. Verify waste is being stored, and managed per state, federal, local and SLAC/DOE regulations and/or policies. Notify appropriate personnel of any non-compliance issues.
- Works with emergency response personnel in situations involving radioactive and mixed materials, such as spill clean-up.
- Maintain and inspect the centralized radioactive and mixed waste storage area, waste pick-up vehicles and associated supplies and safety equipment. Arrange for maintenance or repair as needed.
- Report problems to supervisor as appropriate.
- Perform housekeeping duties as assigned, sweeping, mopping, dusting, rainwater removal, etc.
- With guidance from the supervisor, provides customer and compliance assistance to research and facilities personnel.
- Work with SLAC’s electronic databases (e.g., MS Excel, Oracle)
To be successful in this position you will bring:
- Knowledge and training on state and federal regulations pertaining to radioactive and mixed waste management, transportation, and disposal.
- Radioactive and mixed waste material coursework and/or significant experience working with radioactive and mixed materials.
- Familiarity with chemical reference materials. Ability to interpret information in order to solve problems and/or complete work assignments.
- Ability to follow protocols and policies and apply technical and regulatory information to complete work assignments and to solve problems.
- Ability to use computer systems.
- Knowledge of and ability to select, use and maintain specialized personnel protective equipment necessary for working with radioactive and mixed materials.
- Be able to determine the safe and appropriate method necessary carrying out job assignments.
- Ability to work under general supervision and perform assigned tasks from verbal / written instructions and established policies and procedures.
- Good interpersonal communication and ability to respond courteously and quickly to customer concerns and needs as required.
- Ability to work in a team environment, and independently with supervision.
- Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer support in a respectful, supportive, and service-oriented manner.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Associate degree in Environmental or General Science with significant related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Familiarity with SLAC/DOE policies and procedures for managing radioactive and mixed waste.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
The expected pay range for this position is $38.13 (Step 1) - $45.97 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
