The purpose of this classification is to perform technical/manual work functions associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic traffic signal and street lighting systems.
The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions within this classification, but are determined by the normal requirements for the particular position.
Troubleshoots, modifies, tests, repairs and maintains all traffic signal and street lighting system equipment in emergency and non-emergency situations, specifically: pulling wires and replacing small parts/fixtures.
Installs streetlight poles and traffic signal equipment; locates underground utility cables, digs trenches, sets poles, installs conduit and pullboxes, sets wiring controllers, installs traffic lights and conductor cable, and makes electrical connections.
Performs bench work involving component level and computerized traffic equipment.
Programs electronic signal controllers, electro-mechanical controllers, electronic conflict monitors, electronic and mechanical time clocks, and loop detectors.
Operates remote access computer terminal to monitor and modify signaled intersections.
Installs traffic counter and speed analyzers for traffic studies; retrieves data from controllers and counters.
Designs network for fiber optics and determines needed supplies; performs fusion and mechanical splicing and integrity testing of fiber optic and copper cables; installs fiber optic cable; integrates fiber with electronics for traffic camera and systems.
Builds forms for pouring concrete pole foundations; ensures traffic and employee safety by placing work zone signs and flags.
Observes traffic control devices to detect malfunctions and timing errors; prepares work orders for repairs or maintenance; performs preventive maintenance of equipment and tools.
Operates machinery and equipment in the performance of duties, specifically: bucket truck boring machine, concrete saw, air compressor, pneumatic loop sealant guns, backhoe, trencher, various drills, soldering iron, generator, chainsaw, computer, and diagnostic instruments.
Required to be on twenty-four hour call as scheduled and arrive on location within one hour of notification.
Reviews price quotes for equipment/supplies; purchase electrical supplies.
Cleans and organizes buildings, work areas, vehicles, materials and equipment.
Receives and/or prepares documentation, records, and reports; forwards to appropriate personnel or maintains.
Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
Performs other related duties as required.
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by a vocational or technical diploma or certification in Electronics, Electrical, Civil Engineering, or a related field; one year experience or training in an electrical, electronic, civil engineering, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama commercial driver’s license (CDL), Class B, within twelve months of employment. This job classification is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to operate a variety of construction, automated office, and electronics equipment including bucket truck boring machine, concrete saw, air compressor, pneumatic loop sealant guns, backhoe, trencher, various drills, soldering iron, generator, chainsaw, computer, diagnostic instruments, electronics tools, etc. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for heavy work.
DATA COMPREHENSION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things which may include maps, forms, reports, schematics, procedural manuals and operational manuals.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to speak with and/or signal people to convey or exchange electronics and civil engineering information, including giving/receiving assignments and/or directions to/from co-workers, assistants, managers, or supervisors as well as communicating with the general public.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of electronics, electrical and civil engineering documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write job related documentation and reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand complex electronic, electrical and civil engineering principles and techniques, to understand departmental policies and procedures, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow verbal and written instructions.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, calculate decimals and percentages, utilize basic algebraic and geometric formulas.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to visually inspect items for proper length, width, and shape using job related equipment which may include drafting instruments, surveyors tools, and standard measuring devices.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using construction, electronics, electrical and automated office equipment and to operate a motor vehicle.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, electronics, electrical, construction and automated office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting motion or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DIFFERENTIATION: Requires the ability to discern color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive nature of sounds by ear.
