About the Office:

Serving approximately 8.4 million people, the government of New York City addresses some of the greatest urban challenges in the world. Within that government, the Mayor’s Office of Appointments (MOA) is responsible for helping the Mayor choose candidates for more than 200 boards and commissions vital to the operation and growth of the City. Additionally, MOA serves a critical role by providing talent recruitment and development support for the Administration, helping to build a strategy to create a sustainable and diverse talent pipeline for the Administration’s senior leadership positions.

To assist our office in its service to the City, we’re looking for a self-motivated individual to serve on a team that manages a suite of innovative programs to help strengthen and diversify the leadership for the government of the City of New York.

The Boards & Commissions team operates within the Mayor’s Office of Appointments (“MOA”) by partnering with mayoral offices and City agencies to fill vacancies on the City’s board and commissions which fall under the Mayor’s purview. The Team is tasked with developing and implementing a strategy for the acquisition, retention, and development of members of the City’s over 200 boards and commissions. These boards are a vital part of the City government, making critical policy decisions and advising the Mayor and agencies on a wide range of pressing issues. Boards are composed of a combination of citizens, government employees, and policy experts – all individuals that work tirelessly to serve the city.

About the Role:

The Special Assistant is responsible for supporting the appointments team. He or she will be in close contact with the Deputy Mayor’s teams and other offices to ensure effective coordination so that all teams are meeting tight timelines to produce fully vetted candidates to be appointed to boards and commissions and or agencies.

· Work independently and collaboratively to review and finalize materials

· Edit, vet and summarize sensitive documents

· Keep trackers, schedules, databases, and memos up to date

· Perform relevant research and writing with respect to policy matters

· Maintain collegial, professional, and respectful environment on the team

Qualifications:

· Excellent communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills

· Flexibility to quickly shift work priorities to meet the demands of time-sensitive projects

· Superb research skills with the ability to synthesize large amounts of information for presentation to stakeholders and principals

· Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

· Ability to develop and execute a strategic plan to meet goals without significant oversight

· Ability to complete work independently with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion, and maintain the security of confidential documentation

· An understanding of New York City’s operational agencies and political environment is a plus

· A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Salary Range:

$50,000 - $70,000
