Position Summary
The Snow Removal position is responsible for removing snow on assigned residential or commercial sites on an “as needed” basis. Reporting locations available in Middleton, Sun Prairie and Downton Madison. Primary function is to remove snow using a shovel, snow blower, plow truck, or other equipment. Duties are assigned based on availability and skill set.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Removes snow using a shovel or snow blower for several hours at a time, depending on the amount of snowfall.
  • Applies salt for several hours at the time, depending on weather conditions.
  • Places removed snow in appropriate locations, avoiding piling it on trees, shrubs, fire hydrants or sidewalks.
  • May operate Salt Truck or End Loader to spread salt from a truck with a mounted salt hopper/spreader (based on experience).
  • May remove snow with a pickup plow or a Bobcat (based on experience).
  • Reports either to a central location or directly to the job site as assigned
  • Checks in with supervisor/Route Manager prior to going home in the event that help is needed else-where.
  • Reports any concerns to a supervisor.
  • Maintains a good attendance record, arriving on time, or as promptly as possible for all snow events as directed.
  • Checks in with supervisor as soon as you get to the site and prior to finishing work to ensure accurate recording of time.
  • Answers customers’ questions or refers customer about our snow removal processes or refers customer to on-site supervisor as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor and coworkers to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Cleans equipment after each use and return it to designated area.
  • Keeps vehicle clean at all times.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor/manager.
  • Follows company safety policies and procedures at all times.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors during winter months.
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including inclement weather (rain, snow or cold).
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection is required for duties such as equipment operation that expose the individual to elevated noise levels.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual will demonstrate and perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The ability to effectively communicate and interact, in a positive manner, with all Company personnel, regulatory agencies, customers, consultants and other contractor personnel is also required. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education, Certification and License:

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record is required; commercial driver’s license (CDL) is helpful.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in snow removal using shovel or snow blower is preferred.
  • Previous equipment operating experience (loader, bobcat, skid steer or other used in snow removal) is helpful but not required.

Specific Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from any work site.
  • Must have availability for a minimum of 6 hours shifts during the day or overnight; 12-24 hour availability is preferred.
  • Must be willing to dress appropriately for all weather conditions.
  • Must have proven record of good attendance and reliability.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to work outside, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to shovel snow, sometimes for several hours at a time.
  • Stands and walks for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • Squats, stoops, or kneels and lifts objects from ground frequently.
  • Full extension of arms above head and in front of body.
  • Consistently lifts weight of up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally carries and pushes/pulls weights of up to 50 pounds.
  • Fine motor skills required for use of small equipment and hand tools.

Job Specifications

  • This is a Temporary position (November – April).
  • Variable hours based on snow removal.
  • Overtime may be required as workload dictates.
  • On Call job requirement
