Findlay City Schools is seeking an ASL Certified Sign Language Interpreter to join our amazing team of educators. We are looking to support the staff as well as all of our students by minimizing linguistic, cultural and physical barriers. You must work well with children and adults, communicate effectively with others, and accurately represent the classroom instruction, teacher/student dialogue, and relevant information in the mode of communication used by the student.

Requirements:

  • Skilled in American Sign Language
  • Demonstrate the ability to process spoken language and sign simultaneously
  • Ability to communicate information clearly to students, parents, teachers and peers
  • Follow guidelines and procedures established for Educational Interpreters
  • Ability to sign academic content to student with Hearing Impairments
  • ODE issued Associate License for Interpreter of the Hearing Impaired

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support teachers by interpreting classroom instruction and directions for hearing impaired students(s)
  • Prepare or pre teach new vocabulary necessary for students to access the instruction within a classroom setting.
  • Prepare for course work through means such as consultation with instructors, reading the assignments, and previewing educational lessons/videos.
  • Informally assess student language skills and share pertinent findings with teachers.
  • Work with the general education teacher to determine the best physical placement of interpreter and student.
  • Assume other in-school interpreting responsibilities such as: parent conferences, testing, disciplinary situations, counseling, field trips, etc., as requested by the direct supervisor.
  • Work closely with the H.I. teacher to report on a consistent basis about student’s progress or any related problems/concerns.
  • Maintain contact with the H.I. teacher and general education teacher who, in turn, will maintain contact with the family members.
  • Facilitate communication between students who are deaf and all others in their presence.
  • Collaborate with and provide support to staff focused to ASL and best practices as requested by the direct supervisor.
