Each year, the Sierra Nevada Alliance places 32 AmeriCorps members with partner conservation organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. During their terms of service, members restore and monitor impaired Sierra watersheds, educate local residents and visitors on environmental issues, and recruit and manage volunteers for a variety of programs. SNAP members gain skills and technical training, are mentored by outstanding environmental leaders, and provide a meaningful contribution to the communities of the Sierra Nevada.

Trout Unlimited Position Description: Are you interested in working for Trout Unlimited in Truckee, CA? TU and the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps partnership is excited to host a 3/4 term AmeriCorps position out of our Truckee office to lead outreach and coldwater conservation work that benefits wild and native trout in the Sierras. Specifically, we are interested in those with experience working with fly fishing/sportsmen and women’s groups, clubs, and individuals. This is important to being able to successfully carry out the projects you will be tasked with during your term.

Members will serve full-time, from February until mid-September 2023. This position will aid with projects with an emphasis on angler outreach, volunteer management, angling initiatives, angling surveys, e-fishing surveys, youth education and stream restoration.

Additionally, TU is looking for help organizing our existing members and bringing in new volunteers for our smaller scale restoration projects, particularly in the Truckee River watershed and Eastern Sierra. You will have the opportunity to make connections and pursue your own projects within the fishing and conservation world. This AmeriCorps position will report to our California Inland Trout Program Director and work directly with our Northern Sierra Project Manager and Desert Terminal Lakes Project Coordinator.

Site-Specific Training Provided:

  • Stream monitoring and inventorying techniques such as SCI, SWAMP, Snorkel Surveys, etc.
  • Volunteer and member outreach and databasing
  • Social Media and communications

Example Tasks

  • · Work with the seven regional grassroots chapters (Sac-Sierra, Sagebrush, Truckee and Feather River, El Dorado, Eastern Sierra and Sierra Trinity Cascades) and provide them aid with projects, events, and outreach ideas
  • · Help lead angling initiatives that will help protect California’s wild trout fisheries
  • · Assist in field work in and around the Sierras
  • · Help plan and execute the Sierra Trout Camp, our flagship youth education program in California
  • · Serve as a field aid on our project to enhance instream flows through the Truckee River Operating Agreement
  • · Provide monitoring both before and after stream restoration projects
  • · Data entry and analysis
  • · Utilized and integrate social media platforms in our organizing, media, and communications work
  • · Help TU staff manage and coordinate a volunteer labor force to complete small scale restoration work
  • · Find time to fish and get familiar with TU’s work in the Sierra Watershed’s watershed. Free California Fishing licenses provided to TU SNAP positions.
  • · Help execute and develop outreach programs for Trout Unlimited throughout the Sierras
  • · Work with staff between multiple programs in California and help advance programmatic work
