Summary

The functional responsibilities of the Senior Product Engineer include administering daily technical issues, understanding the product end use and material constraints, defining internal requirements necessary to produce the product and addressing customer technical concerns when a product fails to meet expectations. The position provides technical interface between the customer and Special Metals. The Senior Product Engineer relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Essential Functions

  • Administer to daily technical issues as directed by the Manager, Product Engineering for ensuring a consistent and reliable product.
  • Define/approve process routes (items) necessary to meet the product material and end use property constraints.
  • Maintain an ongoing technical interface via technical meetings and discussions with the customer as assigned.
  • Perform necessary technical evaluations to address customer concerns.
  • Investigate claims and document findings.
  • Provide technical direction for new products and inquires.
  • Provide technical support where appropriate to other areas of the organization.
  • Develop, establish and document new and improved procedures and methods for metal production.
  • Establish Company process standards.
  • Initiate, manage and monitor experimental and product testing projects.
  • Perform root-cause failure analysis.
  • Monitor alloy performance and evaluate material deterioration.
  • Provide engineering direction in order to optimize the production of alloys.
  • Perform characterization of new product.
  • Responsible for providing technical support for Sales (review of RFQs, new orders and specifications), Manufacturing (definition of process steps and item review) and Quality (definition of MOMs).
  • Provide assistance, as required, to Plant Engineering on development of new process capabilities through Capital improvements and commissioning new assets.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriate.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

· A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required. Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science degree is preferred. An advanced degree is a plus.

· At least five years of experience is required.

· Six-sigma training is preferred.

Special Skills

· Must have knowledge of the principles and practices VAR/VIM/ESR melting, Hot & Cold Rolling, Forging, and Extrusion.

· Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence as well as presentations to senior leadership.

· Ability to build and maintain positive relationships internally and externally.

· Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

· Ability to use a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
