D&E Department
The Development & Engineering (D&E) team drives the technology, innovation and new development of data center infrastructure across Vantage’s companywide portfolio. D&E evaluate new sites, drives cost and schedule in line with corporate goals and serve as subject matter experts across the entire project lifecycle from concept through commissioning. The team collaborates with Sales, Operations and management along the way. D&E also work hand in hand with the Construction team to come up with a vertically integrated design and ensures new and existing standards and designs are executed effectively. One thing that distinguishes Vantage is that our technical staff is given the responsibility and authority to directly drive tangible results. Our team can align long-term operational sustainability with value engineering and cost metrics to deliver products aligned with corporate goals unlike external resources. This approach empowers each member of the team to drive high-impact decisions and results.
Position Overview
The lifeblood of a data center revolves around power and telecommunications. As the digitization of our global economy continues to expand, many of the power utilities are finding they cannot keep up with the speed of that expansion, which places significant constraints on many of the world’s largest data center markets. Vantage is looking for a technically-minded and meticulous Director for Onsite Power Generation to drive the energisation of both new and existing data center campuses where these jurisdictions are constrained by power availability.
Constant communication with Market/Business Development (MD/BD), Site Selection, Design Engineering (DE), Innovation Engineering (IE), Sustainability, New Site Development (NSD), Construction (CONSTR), Operations, Sales, Marketing, domain experts and the wider Executive Team (specifically with regards to strategic elements) will be required to keep pace with Vantage’s strategic land and power acquisition goals, including enhancing Vantage’s product and service offering wherever possible.
Essential Job Functions
  • Prepare and own power and energy generation strategy, including cogeneration, microgrid, gas turbine, etc. in line with the Management Teams expectations and direction
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and opportunities to innovate using concepts from within and outside of the data center industry; keep up to date with legislation
  • Partner with leadership to establish frameworks and processes teams can leverage commercially with customers as well as in design, delivery and operation of on-site power alternatives
  • Coordinate with IE and Sustainability teams to make solutions readily available globally with evaluation criteria tied to Vantage’s greenhouse gas reductions commitments
  • Act as global resource for regional teams as they look for applicable solutions in specific markets, move from global strategy to implementation and execution, and engage with utilities and regulatory agencies
Duties
  • Engage with MD/BD team to identify markets where onsite power generation will likely be required
  • Identify markets/jurisdictions where onsite power generation is allowable; where it is prohibited, explore creative options to enable feasibility
  • Work closely with IE to develop a suite of standardized onsite power solutions and make them available to regional teams as they look for application technologies
  • Partner with finance to create template financial business case models including cost assessments of CAPEX, OPEX and commercial framework for recovery of costs with customers
  • Explore and evaluate EH&S and sustainability impact of technologies and include evaluation criteria frameworks projects can include as part of technology selection
  • Work with sales, marketing and design engineering as they provide technical support (prepare technical material for presentation to prospective customers (RFPs), identify customer impacting operational characteristics & propose mitigating options, outline onsite power and energy strategy, etc.)
  • Bridge knowledge between internal execution teams and external consultants, vendors, and operators as needed
  • Support NSD, CONSTR, and DE as they design, procure and deliver onsite power generation; including but not limited to review of scope, schedule, and budget inputs from all required internal and external resources, contractors, and vendors on an as needed basis
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical systems as well as knowledge of the energy use of organizations, with a recognized degree or equivalent (background in engineering preferred)
  • 10-year minimum career experience, 15+ preferred; data center experience a plus
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in power/energy of a large-scale power and energy generation
  • Knowledge of customer requirements, business drivers, financials and specialist sources of information, legislative requirements where necessary
  • Interpret a variety of business inputs and synthesize to strategic plans
  • Demonstrated ability to building relationships and work in a collaborative manner
  • Possess ability to be resilient, persistent, self-reliant, and culturally self-aware
  • Flexible, adaptable, and self-directed; able to work in dynamic environment, e.g.: remotely, while traveling, across multiple time zones, cross functionally, multiple projects simultaneously, etc.
  • National and international travel will be required on a regular basis.
Additional Details:
  • Salary Range: $150,000– $185,000 Base + Bonus (this range is based on Colorado market data and may vary in other locations)

  • Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
