Senior Director, Mission Programs Job at The ALS Association

SUMMARY: This is a visionary role that will help incubate and establish new mission programs and activities at The ALS Association. The incumbent will support the coordination of efforts across The ALS Association’s mission areas to drive activity that is conducted with urgency, integrity, and effectiveness, including communications about mission areas to ensure The Association’s leadership role and sustainability. This role will oversee The ALS Association’s ALS Roundtable program and develop and execute new initiatives and programs stemming from Roundtable meetings.

Senior Director of Mission Programs will manage direct reports, including Associate Director of Mission Programs. This role will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Research.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Mission Program Oversight:

  • Incubate and/or lead new mission programs and activities, as needed.
  • Manage the ALS Roundtable program in coordination with the Corporate Development team. Help identify topics and stakeholders. Help engage sponsors. Oversee meeting planning and follow-up. Help coordinate activity across Association staff and with contractors/consultants.
  • Project manage programmatic activity related to Roundtable outcomes, including participant outreach, reporting, and the design and fundraising for new initiatives.
  • Prioritize and as needed, implement or retire previously identified program opportunities.
  • Create and evaluate new metrics and tracking systems, while creatively reporting impact of the mission’s work on the ALS community.
  • Oversee the creation and operations of programs arising from the roundtable, including projects such as reducing time to diagnosis and complications of ALS and increasing clinical trial participation.
  • Convey an image that always reflects favorably on the Association.

Mission Strategy Coordination and Development:

  • Help coordinate and integrate The Association mission areas among themselves, and with the Data Integration, Development, Operations, and Communications teams.
  • Support metric development and performance measurement activity for the Mission department and help coordinate planning efforts across mission areas.
  • Collaborate with Development on mission related fundraising opportunities.
  • Ensure that people with ALS and their families remain at the center of all the Association’s mission work.
  • Develop and lead, as needed, meetings, workshops, and working groups related to the Associations mission.
  • Design and carry out research and whole mission presentations to promote The Association’s mission and inform the community about ALS.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position will supervise a team of 1-2 professionals in the Mission department.
  • Indirectly supervises the work of contracted staff.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in a clinical or biomedical research field required. A Masters or Ph.D. in biomedical research, public policy, and/or health policy is preferred.
  • A proven understanding of how a philanthropy can advance research, care, and policy in a disease space.
  • Familiarity with ALS or related neurodegenerative/neurological disorders preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, program planning, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, public speaking skills, written communication skills, management skills and success in developing and leading strategic projects with proven results.
  • Computer skills required: (Contract Management Systems; Development Software; Human Resource Systems; Microsoft Office; Project Management Software)
  • At least seven years of progressive experience in a nonprofit setting with a strong strategy background and project management skills, including but not limited to experience in:
    • Research operations, including strategic planning and grant management, preferably in a non-profit environment.
    • Government relations, public affairs matters and the representation of specific groups or organizations at the Federal level through congressional networking, media relations, strategic communications and managing grassroots efforts.
    • care services such as nursing, public health education therapy, social work or other medical discipline, preferably in a non-profit environment.
    • Demonstrated productivity as a project manager and leader of multi-disciplinary and interdepartmental teams
  • Travel required up to 20%

PAY TRANSPARENCY:

The ALS Association’s pay range for this position is $110,000 - $125,000 annually.

The ALS Association has compensation ranges for various work locations throughout the United States, allowing us to compensate employees competitively and consistently in diverse geographic markets. The above-listed listed range shows prospective compensation for this role; the appropriate range will be established by what is eventually determined to be the candidate's primary work location. Various factors, including the complexity and significance of the role, job duties/requirements, relevant experience and abilities, and primary work location, determine individual compensation. Compensation ranges are evaluated and typically adjusted on a regular basis. Offers are made within the compensation range that is in effect at the time of the job offer.

The Association may, at its discretion, offer merit-based increases tied to individual performance. The benefits listed may differ depending on employment status with the Association.
