Protective is searching for a Senior Application Development Engineer to join the New Business Life Systems team of the IT department either as a work-from-home virtual employee or working at our Birmingham, AL corporate headquarters. Our team is responsible for the enhancements, maintenance, and support of the New Business & Underwriting systems.

Job Summary

    • The Senior Application Development Engineer is responsible for designing, coding, testing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting software systems.
    • Works closely with business systems analysts and business partners to gather requirements in order to ensure the business partners’ needs and expectations are met in a timely and cost-effective manner.
    • Diagnoses, isolates and debugs software problems and provides resolution.
    • Prepares and modifies technical documentation.
    • Researches, evaluates and recommends new development tools and applications as appropriate.
    • Responsibilities include managing work within a project timeline and raising issues to the team as they are identified.

Work Experience, Education, Certification/Training Required

    • 5+ years .NET development experience
    • Experience in SQL database development
    • Typically, post-secondary degree, preferably in Management Information Services, Computer Science or Math related field may substitute for work and/or technical experience
    • Proven experience in all aspects of the software development process

Knowledge and Abilities Required

    • Must have strong data analysis and data manipulation skills
    • Must be able to manage multiple, changing priorities and resolve conflicts
    • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently, willing to self-teach and to take responsibility for ongoing professional development
    • Must have oral and written communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly with peers in IT, business partners and, as needed, with technical resources from outside vendors
    • Must be comfortable working with multiple programming languages and database environments
    • Must have the ability to perform reviews of other developers’ code and provide sign-off and or constructive feedback

Required Skills

    • C#, including WinForms development
    • Visual Studio
    • Web Services (RESTful, WCF and SOAP)
    • Minimum of 5 years of development experience in the .Net framework
    • ASP.Net MVC 5+
    • SQL Server 2008+
    • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
    • Ability to build dynamic user interfaces from scratch based on mockups and detailed requirements
    • Experience with TFS or GIT (preferably both)

Recommended Skills

    • Experience with modern JavaScript libraries (ES5 or ES6)
    • Experience with modern CSS frameworks
    • Experience with Distributed and Asynchronous Design and Development
Performance-Based Compensation: This position is eligible for an annual incentive based on individual and Company performance.
Note: Pursuant to Colorado law, Protective is providing the applicable salary range for Colorado residents.
Protective’s targeted salary range for this position is $80,000 to $110,000. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to, job location, skills, and experience. The range listed is just one component of Protective’s total compensation package for employees.
This position also offers additional incentive opportunities through an annual incentive based on individual and Company performance as well as a 401k match and a pension plan.
