Security Officer (1st Watch) Job at Bishop Museum

1st Watch: Midnight to 8 am.


Provide protection and safety for Bishop Museum visitors, staff, volunteers, collections, and buildings. Ability to work irregular hours, including evening functions and overtime on short notice.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Effectively patrol all museum buildings, grounds, parking lots, and perimeters
  • Locate irregularities that may damage or harm Bishop Museum properties, visitors, volunteers, or staff
  • Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic as needed
  • Monitor alarm and CCTV systems
  • Respond to, assess, and notify authorities of suspicious, alarm, or emergency situations
  • Monitor catering staff and guests during special events
  • Secure buildings and grounds after all staff have left
  • Assume responsibility for building, contents, and staff during non-public hours
  • Complete written reports and logs as required
  • Offer assistance to visitors and make them feel welcome
  • In Lieutenant's absence, be prepared to take responsibility for the shift as directed by supervisor, assigning officers, ensuring proper procedures are followed, checking the event calendar and, in the case of an event, calling the department responsible with any questions
  • Foster teamwork between all members of Security
  • Participate in developing alternative patrol routines for effective use of staff
  • Participate in developing assignment schedules that make effective use of present staffing
  • Suggest changes to security policies and procedures to improve security and safety
  • Participate in training that will enhance security officer development and professionalism

Qualifications:

  • Valid Hawaii Guard Card
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in written form
  • Stamina, strength and dexterity in the feet and legs
  • Keenness of vision and memory for detail
  • Capable of original thinking and planning
  • Training, or willing to be trained, in CPR, AED, and first aid procedures

  • Tact in dealing with staff, researchers and visitors
  • Patience with children and senior citizens
  • Ability to handle pressure and make quick, accurate decisions

  • Must be able to pass background investigation and maintain an operating telephone
