Project/Unit Description

ASL conducts research supporting sponsors across the Department of Defense and focuses on air and missile defense, command and control, battle management, systems (including open) architectures, systems integration, human-centered engineering, test and evaluation, virtual and constructive training, mission planning, and hardware- and software-in-the-loop development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate strategic direction and plans for the lab’s IRAD investments.
  • Manage the lab’s IRAD portfolio, including financial oversight, technical oversight, reporting to the GTRI Chief Technology Officer, and securing all required approvals, reporting and documentation.
  • Participate in all GTRI Chief Scientist meetings, including technical reviews, strategy sessions, administrative discussions, and planning.
  • Articulate IRAD technical and funding decisions to the CTO, Deputy Director, and Director.
  • Form strategic relationships with Lab Chief Scientists from other GTRI laboratories.
  • Work with researchers both within GTRI and Resident Instruction to develop Strategic Initiative concepts with potential for high impact to GTRI, Georgia Tech, and the nation.
  • Advise the lab’s Director in the direction and execution of Laboratory strategy.
  • Support the lab’s Director with strategic business development opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work location can be either Atlanta, GA or Huntsville, AL.
  • Assume a pivotal role in managing and enhancing the Lab's strategic initiatives, in collaboration with the Lab Director and Chief Engineer.
  • Drive the development of IRAD proposals within various ASL Divisions to align with and implement ASL’s strategic plan.
  • Facilitate the transition of research developed under IRAD projects into externally funded programs, fostering a culture of innovation.
  • Assist the Lab Director in proposal strategy, review, and bid/no-bid decisions, demonstrating commitment to our goals.
  • Foster and maintain strategic relationships with leaders across GTRI and Georgia Tech, inclusive of establishing research partnerships with Resident Instruction.
  • Provide leadership for large, multi-Division projects and initiatives, reinforcing the importance of team collaboration.
  • Manage sponsored research projects, ensuring high standards and efficiency.
  • Review and ensure the quality, clarity, and accuracy of external publications from the lab.
  • Represent GTRI and GT in discussions that require pertinent technical expertise, acting as an ambassador for our technical acumen.
  • Liaise with GTRI’s CTO on matters requiring broad institute technical expertise, reinforcing the lab's integral role within the institute.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for identifying and motivating individual researchers for strategic engagements, playing a crucial role in building the lab's future success.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, project leadership, building multidisciplinary collaborations, and engaging with government funding organizations.
  • Research and technical achievements in a relevant domain.
  • Prior leadership of IRAD projects and experience with IRAD proposals and execution.
  • Prior leadership of sponsored research projects and sponsor interactions.
  • Strong history and continued ability to attract sponsored research funding.
  • A strong background facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders.
  • Holds or meets the requirements for the rank of SRE/SRS or PRE/PRS at GTRI.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Nationally recognized in the industry, as evidenced by noteworthy journal and/or conference publications, session leadership at national symposia, membership on national committees, and involvement in salient professional societies at the senior level or above.
  • PhD in a scientific or engineering field and 6+ years of experience in leading research programs.

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel.

Education and Length of Experience

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 14 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or a related field.
  • 12 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Engineering, Science, or a related field.
  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Engineering, Science, or a related field.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
