Plant Pathology Assay Development Scientist


YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The primary responsibilities of this role, Plant Pathology Assay Development Scientist, are to:


  • Independently identify, design, develop, and implement new bioassays or process improvements for workflow optimization and testing of plants to evaluate the impact of traits, gene edits, biologicals, and/or chemistries more efficiently against diseases and nematodes under greenhouse or growth chamber conditions;
  • Be responsible to design, conduct, and coordinate multiple complex greenhouse and growth chamber experiments to assess and characterize new disease control technologies in Bayer’s portfolio;
  • Work collaboratively with statisticians and data scientists to validate new methods and experimental designs;
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize, and report the results of scientific experiments to develop recommendations to the team, project leads, and Leadership and contribute to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, or trade secrets;
  • Solve complex problems autonomously requiring original thinking, creativity, and deductive reasoning and the application of scientific principles on the design and interpretation of scientific experiments;
  • Achieve commitment to safety and compliance, adhering to safety protocols and best practices;
  • Thrive on meeting challenges, insist on high quality deliverables, work and solve problems independently, and will have proven ability to influence others outside of their management line to accomplish key goals;
  • Mentor peers/colleagues in areas of expertise and/or direct works of others.

Required Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. in Plant Pathology or related life sciences discipline;
  • Strong understanding of plant pathology, nematology, fungicide mode of action, native trait discovery, plant statistics, and plant-microbe interactions;
  • Proficient and practical expertise in controlled environment disease assay development and advancement;
  • Strong experience in conducting research trials and developing scientific procedures with proven ability to work independently and effectively on cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams;
  • Practical experience designing and implementing experiments to evaluate plant phenotype and growth, under controlled environments;
  • Experience working in highly collaborative environment and effectively communicate research findings with audiences from diverse technical backgrounds;
  • Proficient at analyzing large data sets and interpreting results from complex statistical designs;
  • Proficient in R studio;
  • Ability to work in a matrixed organization and clearly communicate ideas/concepts and influence stakeholders without direct authority.
