Scientist, Assay Development Job at Scismic

Scismic San Francisco, CA 94105

Scismic is supporting the growth of a biotech company based out of San Francisco, CA that is advancing drug discovery through its small molecule directed evolution platform!

The company is dedicated to accelerating small molecule discovery by combining massively parallel bench science and computation. Their technology rapidly analyzes 100-1000x more compounds than traditional methods by using a variety of DNA Encoded Libraries and applying machine learning to design high throughput follow-on experiments. By adopting a tightly coupled, iterative cycles of computational and bench science we reduce the cost of early stage drug discovery while tackling hard, medically relevant targets.

Job Summary

Their drug discovery platform relies on generating large data sets from high throughput screening platforms including DNA encoded Libraries (DEL), affinity selection mass spectrometry (ASMS), and biochemical assays. These screens are the driving force behind compound optimization using their proprietary machine learning algorithms. To this end, they are looking for an experienced Scientist or Senior Scientist to lead their assay strategy for biochemical in vitro assays. Their goal is for this individual to own biochemical assay planning, development and optimization for the company. You will own planning and organization but work alongside the other members of the biology team to delegate assay development and optimization as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assay development and optimization for biochemical assays (e.g. TR-FRET, Luminescence, AlphaELISA) to establish in vitro activity and kinetics of small molecule
  • Establishment of a high-throughput screening (HTS) platform
  • Coordination with other members on the biology and automation teams regarding assay development and execution
  • Optimizing protein constructs which will be suitable for potential assays
  • Development of mass spectrometry-based assays
  • Coordination with CROs for outsourcing of assays
  • Advancement of cell-based assay planning and screens
  • Build foundational knowledge of what they do as well as their current portfolio
  • Learn assay methods, practices for data processing, and efforts towards automating lab work from their current team
  • Provide suggestions or thoughts on current processes in order to improve their operations
  • Establish plans for assays of upcoming assays
  • Coordinate with the team for when compounds will be available and when assays will be run
  • Make decisions on compounds to move forward for additional testing
  • Own biochemical assay plans for the company’s target focused projects
  • Establish timelines and coordinate assay development/optimization in alignment with a project timeline
  • Generate a proposal for an HTS platform
  • Aid in establishing constructs which will be valuable for in vitro
  • Establish a preliminary path for an HTS platform
  • Provide guidance for the compute team towards generating standard data analysis workups
  • Explore technology development ideas towards integrating biochemical assays in other aspects of their platform

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10-13 years industry experience, Master’s degree with 5-7 years industry experience, or a PhD with 0-3 years industry experience
  • Expertise in biochemical in vitro assays to study ****the activity of small molecules (e.g. TR-FRET, Luminescence, AlphaLISA, kinetic analysis)
  • Ability to manage several projects at the same time
  • Translating and troubleshooting assays in the literature to be functional in-house
  • Experience with HTS platforms
  • Proficiency with automated liquid handlers

Preferred Qualifications

  • How to work with affinity-based screening platforms
  • How to develop mass spectrometry-based assays
  • How to coordinate with and manage relationships with CROs
  • How to effectively work as a key member of matrix teams and drive projects through matrix leadership

Benefits and Perks

  • Healthcare/Dental/Vision insurance plans, with premiums 100% covered for employees and 50% covered for dependents.
  • FSA and HSA programs.
  • 401k program.
  • Equity compensation.
  • Unlimited vacation policy.
  • Annual professional development budget for all employees.
