POSITION SUMMARY
The School Nurse advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement and health of students by keeping children healthy, safe, in school, and ready to learn. The School Nurse provides skills and education that encourage self-empowerment, problem solving, effective communication, and collaboration with others by delivering quality health care and nursing intervention for actual and potential health problems. They provide direct care needs of the student, including medication administration and routine treatments and procedures for all children, including those with chronic conditions or special healthcare needs.

Required Education, Certification, Experience and Skill:

1. Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.

2. Valid registration as an RN or LPN in the State of Indiana.

3. Current certification in basic life support training (BLS)

4. Two years of experience in school-based nursing preferred.

Position Responsibilities/Standards

· Utilize nursing knowledge and skills in the safe implementation of basic preventative therapeutic and rehabilitative nursing care of students as evidenced by documentation and observation of positive patient care outcomes.

· Assist with access and oversight to medication and/or treatments for which students have a prescription and are required to take during school hours based on school guidelines.

· Triage students by assessing symptoms or health concerns utilizing clinical protocols and/or established school policy and procedures to assess if a student needs to go home, given over-the-counter medicine, if authorized, or prescription medication as authorized based on school policy and procedures.

· Act as a resource to school personnel and parents with questions/concerns specific to students for which they are responsible and assure that privacy guidelines are followed as indicated.

· Assist with individual health plans (HIP’s) when health related questions need to be addressed specifically and only during school hours; including, medical information input into 504/IEP conferences when indicated.

· Maintain appropriate supplies to handle job tasks in the clinic and notify RHC promptly when supplies are getting low.

· Follow established RHC protocols to notify supervisor of an absence so that replacement staff can be established at the school clinic.

· Provide information and referrals when needed and indicated for students, parents, and staff.

· Assist school personnel with CHIRP resources and information to maintain accurate data.

· Assist with outreach & education and immunization events as agreed upon; including, health education presentations as time permits.

· Assist school personnel with assuring that religious and medical exemptions are documented in school electronic database software programs.

· Assist nurse practitioner during established hours by following RHC primary care requirements and HRSA indicated quality measures; including, documenting in the school electronic database software programs and RHC electronic medical records program.

· Assist with specific outreach events, such as sports physicals, new student orientation, and other mutually agreed upon events between school leadership and RHC providers. Collaborate with school leaders on communication and outreach of such events.

· Follow all federal, state, and Indiana public school guidelines appropriate to the provision of healthcare services.

· Exemplify the RHC mission through a personal example of excellent service to students, school faculty, and coworkers and treat all with respect and dignity.

· Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and be responsible for information discussed.

· Attend required annual in-service programs.

· Participate in continuing education activities and obtain required contact hours.

· Other duties as assigned.
