Help save lives every day! Bloodworks has an opening for a Research Technologist I to join our Dong Research Lab at Bloodworks NW! Working under direct supervision, the incumbent will perform activities associated with various assigned research projects focusing on studying bleeding and thrombosis in research and clinical settings, assuring compliance of stated goals and objectives as outlined in each protocol.

Bloodworks Northwest Research Institute is seeking a motivated individual to join the Dong research laboratory at Bloodworks. The Dong laboratory leverages expertise in blood science and seeks to identify the physiologic and molecular mechanisms of disease. The successful candidate will be willing to learn new techniques potentially including animal research. Additionally, the candidate will also be responsible for the preparation of common reagents, maintaining laboratory records, and ordering and maintaining laboratory inventories and other laboratory duties as needed.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting mouse experiments, including daily maintenance, breeding, blood draws from the eye, heart and tail vein, and mouse surgery.
Prepares and conducts laboratory research experiments following written protocols, descriptions in literature or de novo including: Preparing and maintaining cell cultures; DNA extraction and preparation.
  • Analyze and communicate results of experiments.
  • Inventory recording and tracking.
  • Basic laboratory maintenance.
  • Perform data entry.
  • Troubleshoot problems with reagents and/or equipment.
  • Coordinate activities with work of other Research staff to ensure achievement of objectives.
  • Contribute to writing papers and grants.
  • Order and perform quality control of reagents and supplies.
  • Specific experiments as listed below with preference given to individuals with previous experiences in animal research.
  • cDNA cloning, including mammalian and bacterial expression system, DNA amplification
  • Cell culture, including functional assays
  • Protein chemistry including protein purification, chromatography, and detection
  • Mouse models, including daily maintenance, breeding, blood draws from the eye, heart and tail vein, and mouse surgery
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as biology, biomedical science, biochemistry.
  • Previous Experiences in mouse models and/or molecular biology are highly desirable.
  • Research Laboratory experience is beneficial.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills with attention to detail.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This position will require a flexible schedule including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
  • Exposed to aerosol dangers from animals and may require use of supportive equipment for breathing if in the Vivarium.
  • This position has direct exposure to blood borne pathogens and requires work with human and animal blood and tissue samples and non-pathogenic viruses.
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 (defined as two weeks after receiving final vaccine dose), or approved medical or religious exemption to the vaccine, is a condition of this role.
