Your role

Did you know that your empirical research skills can serve you extremely well in certain roles in the financial services industry?
UBS Research is one of the most innovative investment research departments in the world. We are pioneering a transformational approach that we believe will take investment research to a different level.
This approach places empirical scientific techniques at the core of the financial analysis that we do. Would you like to be part of this transformation?

Your team

At UBS Research, equity analyst teams scrutinize company financial statements, analyze a company’s business from the ground up, and explore scenarios. The objective of all this work is to understand the company’s short, medium, and long run earning potential in order to make stock recommendations to professional investors like asset managers and fund managers.
We want you to join one of these small (3-4 person) equity analyst teams. Here, you and your teammates will leverage deep industry knowledge, fluency with microeconomic principles applied in the real world, and hypothesis-driven statistical analysis of both proprietary and public data sources, to create financial forecasts and valuations for the dozen or companies that you will cover.
Using these forecasts and his or her position near the center of the important investment debates around these companies, the leader of your team will make investment recommendations. He or she will then utilize all the resources of the platform UBS provides to communicate this view which you helped to shape to the smartest and most sophisticated investors around the world.
Eventually, if things go well, you may find yourself leading a team of your own.

Your expertise

  • UBS is committed to setting you up for a successful career in finance. We do not require you to have much knowledge of financial markets, but you should have the drive and determination to succeed in the finance industry
  • We have designed a [15-week] bespoke induction program just for you, to introduce you to the finance industry, and empower you with many of the skills and tools you will need to be a standout research associate
  • Once you have completed this program, you’ll be ready to join an equity analyst team.
Your role
  • Work collaboratively with your team, under the direction of your team lead, to publish thematic research
  • Utilize your skills in empirical research to create and identify opportunities to take ideas / investment claims to data. This includes everything from pitching research ideas to your team lead, to designing empirical strategies to test their hypotheses, to executing the analysis.
  • Learn from your teammates about financial analysis and financial services, and teach your teammates about empirical social science and statistical computing
  • Using the skills we will teach you in the induction program and which you will learn on the job, conduct fundamental and financial valuation analysis on the companies you cover.
  • Convert industry knowledge and research findings into understandable investment opinions
  • Build and maintain financial models to evaluate historical information and generate projections
  • Provide investment recommendations based on modeling, valuation and risk assessments
  • Remain current on market developments to help frame investment strategies

Your experience
  • Ideally 3-5 years' experience designing and executing hypothesis-driven empirical research projects (research experience gained while earning a degree counts).
  • Experience conducting research to inform business decisions would be a major plus.
  • PhD in an empirical social science like economics, sociology, political science, demography, population health, public policy, education, or related field. (Masters’ degree holders can also be competitive, with sufficient experience).
  • Significant experience or formal training in statistical computing, and an ability to work in MS Excel. (Experience in Python would be a major plus).
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to stay organized and work independently on multiple projects under extremely intense time pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively within a team
  • We are an open intellectual environment, but every team has a leader who is ultimately responsible and accountable for its product. In that sense, you must be comfortable communicating and collaborating up and down a hierarchy
  • Teaching experience would be a plus
