POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Health Department Administrator, this is a non-exempt position under FLSA. The Office Manager is in charge when the Administrator is absent.

The Registered Nurse position is responsible for providing direct nursing care to the citizens of Osage County. Coordinating the WIC, Healthy Start, Immunization and Family Planning programs are the primary duties of this position. Employee must possess excellent communication and nursing skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Perform wellness monitoring and blood draws in the office

· Administers immunizations/ vaccinations

· Performs WIC assessments

· Monitors and reports to the State, infectious diseases and animal bites

· Answers medical questions from the general public

· Attends continuing education training as required by each state program or as directed by Health Department Director

· Maintains required continuing education to maintain Kansas licensure

· Participates in Emergency Preparedness exercises, planning and training under direction of Health Department Director

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

· Reports vaccine inventory and data from data loggers to the state at the beginning of every month

· In-office blood pressure checks, performs head lice checks, checks unusual rashes, does pregnancy tests, toenail clinics

· Assists with immunization and toe nail clinics and booths at county fairs and other community events

· May assist with public speaking on health issues and staff trainings

· Performs clinical lab tests

· Acts as a team player, helping other employees with tasks as needed

· Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: 1-3 years of similar experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills of this position reasonably well within six months of employment.

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required and graduation from an accredited School of Nursing is required. Employee must possess a current Registered Nurse licensure from the State Board of Nursing and must be in good standing. Must hold valid driver’s license. Will be required to attend training for infectious disease investigation upon hire.

Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of nursing skills and patient care are required. Employee must be able to operate health care equipment and have a thorough knowledge of venipuncture and physical assessments. The employee must be able to operate a computer, telephone systems, copier/printer, and calculator. The ability to read and interpret patient charts, manuals and written instructions is required.

Problem Solving: Problem solving is a major factor in this position. Problems this employee may encounter include dealing with distressed patients and patient family members.

Decision Making: Decision making is required for this position. This employee makes decisions on whether a patient should be referred to a medical doctor and performs limited interpretations of symptoms.

Supervision: This employee works independently with little or no direct supervision from the Osage County Health Department Administrator.

Financial Accountability: Employee has direct control over department resources or equipment, is required to be bonded and does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and occasional supervision by personnel is required.

Working Conditions: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to human blood and bodily fluids, head lice, adverse weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and work involving excessive noise is possible.

Physical Requirements: Some manual labor of lifting and carrying heavy objects may be required.

Additional Requirements: Other assigned duties as deemed necessary by the Osage County Health Department Administrator.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.50 - $23.00 per hour
