Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge is seeking a full-time Refugee Benefits Specialist to provide culturally sensitive benefit enrollment services and follow-up for immigrants served under all refugee resettlement programs. The Refugee Benefits Specialist will support the refugee resettlement team with client applications for all eligible public assistance programs and services, including but not limited to SNAP, Medicaid, FITAP, WIC, SSI, and Refugee Medical Services, and serve as the authorized representative for client applications, monitor benefit approvals, submit appeals in accordance with required deadlines, assist clients with reapplications and redeterminations and advocate on behalf of clients. This position requires maintaining external relationships and representing the agency to the public, as such it requires a polished business-like demeanor and professional appearance, which excludes unnatural hair color, conspicuous body art and facial piercings.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or other relevant degree. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements

· Valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance

· Completion of background checks such as driving record, criminal record, and sex offense registry, state and local police records, or national sources such as FBI and E-Verify as required by funding agencies or determined necessary by Catholic Charities and results must be satisfactory to CCDBR, its representatives, employees, or agents as an essential requirement of employment.

· Ability to work irregular hours and weekends on short notice is required

Skills:

· Fluency in English is required

· Proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred

· Experience working with public assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, FITAP, etc. is strongly preferred

· Ability to establish and maintain a positive, professional relationship with co-workers, participants, and visitors; cultural sensitivity and the ability to relate well and effectively in a diverse workplace with a diverse client population is required

· Knowledge of and experience working with refugee or immigrants preferred

· Cross-cultural or international experience preferred

· Excellent crisis intervention skills

· Attention to detail and ability to balance multiple simultaneous responsibilities in a fast-paced environment

· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office platform and ability to learn case management database systems

· Ability to meet strict deadlines

· Ability to think strategically and creatively problem solve

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Exercises good judgement and ability to make difficult decisions when necessary

Primary Duties:

· Assist with client enrollment in public assistance programs and services

· Advocate for client and follow up to facilitate enrollment in public assistance programs

· Data entry, file maintenance and reporting

Physical Demands and Work Environment

· Temperature controlled indoor work environment. Fluorescent lighting, occasional isolated conditions

· Must be able to lift 5 to 20 lbs. occasionally for 5 – 30 minutes. This position requires the employee to walk, stoop, lift, bend, squat, kneel, climb, handle. Sitting for 6 to 7 hours a day is expected for this position.

· Driving a motor vehicle for several hours at a time is expected up to 70%

· When the agency responds to disasters, performing duties outside primary responsibilities both in the office and at off-site locations affected by the disaster may be requested.
