THE POSITION:

Under the leadership of the Adult Softball Coordinator, the Adult Softball Umpire enforces ASA/local rules of play on the field during games.
Dates needed: May - August
Hours: Games are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm-10pm depending on registrations

Work Site: Sheehan Park
Start: $20.00-30.00 per game

Essential Job Functions

Major Duties/Essential Functions

• Make accurate calls according to ASA/Local rules provided for slow-pitch softball
• Maintain a safe and fun recreational game play environment
• Listen, respond and answer questions and concerns of players, in a respectful manner
• Complete required reports and forms and turn into the on-site coordinator
• Notify the on-site coordinator of problems and concerns regarding facilities, equipment, players and/or spectators
• Prepare diamond to make it playable (i.e. rake, roll, squeegee, line), if needed
• Take down and put away equipment in the appropriate location at the end of each night
• Coordinate with the on-site coordinator to clean up facility before departing and turn off diamond lights and scoreboard, if needed
• Provide clear communication to and from the Parks and Recreation Office, on-site coordinator and participants
• Assist in managing any problems or emergency situation that may arise while at the program (i.e. safety, first aid, weather cancelations, upset participant, illegal players, etc) if on-site coordinator is not available
• Remain calm in high pressure situations
• Attend all required meetings and trainings
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements of Work

Experience/Education

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Minimum of 2+ years playing softball or baseball preferred
• Previous experience umpiring preferred

• Knowledge*

• Strong knowledge of softball, umpiring techniques and ASA/Local rules
• Knowledge of standard safety practices, department policies and procedures

Skill/Ability

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Ability and willingness to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
• Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, supervisor(s) and the public, and to deal with them in a courteous and tactful manner
• Strong oral communication skills
• Ability and willingness to supervise and maintain control of games
• Ability and willingness to keep accurate records and complete any necessary paperwork
• Ability to stay calm in a high pressure situation
• Ability to make quick decisions using good judgment and the conviction to uphold those decisions if correct or change if found to be incorrect
• Ability to keep the environment recreational, rather than competitive
