The psychiatrist is responsible for supporting mental health care provided by primary care providers and care coordinators treating Memphis Health Center patients in participating community health centers or other primary care clinics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.

Develops treatment plans by determining the nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders; establishing treatment goals and methodologies.

Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring the effect of medications; supervising staff provision of services.

Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress; consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, licensed clinical social worker, nurses, and other health care providers.

Assures quality and safe service for patients and staff by enforcing policies, procedures, standards, rules, Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations requirements, and legal regulations; participating in utilization reviews; remaining available for emergency consultations.

Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.

Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events; writing summaries.

Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Provide regularly scheduled caseload consultation to assigned licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). These consultations will primarily focus on patients who are new to treatment or who are not improving as expected.

Provide telephonic consultation to primary care physicians (PCPs) as requested, focusing on patients in the LCSW caseload.

Discusses patients who need a referral for additional specialty mental health care and advises on treatment plans until patients are engaged in appropriate care.

Ensures that all protected health information (PHI) in local computer/networks is stored in compliance with HIPAA regulations as specified in the Provider Agreement.

Responds to telephone calls from primary care providers and LCSW.

Responds to Email questions/consultations within one business day, sooner if urgent.

Visits each clinic at least weekly. On‐site activities during these meetings may include meetings with LCSW and/or PCP’s, discussing procedures and coordinating services, provider education, case presentation, or in‐person evaluation of selected clients.

Consulting psychiatrists may elect to evaluate clients who present diagnostic or therapeutic challenges.

Consulting psychiatrists provide or participate in training and technical assistance activities organized for LCSW or PCPs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Valid Psychiatrist license in the State of Tennessee.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.

Excellent communication skills. Positive, flexible, and solution‐focused attitude. Ability to multitask during consultations. Ability to quickly synthesize medical and psychiatric data and formulate effective and evidence‐based clinical recommendations.

Completion of an approved residency program in the appropriate discipline of medical practice.

Must maintain professional affiliation with a national medical society.

Must have the ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to the patients and other health care providers of the health center.

Must be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques. Maintain BLS, PALS, & ACLS certifications as applicable.
