Statement of Duties:
The recreation coordinator will assist the parks and recreation director with various activities within a parks and recreation department. In most cases, the recreation coordinator will focus on three main job duties. These include athletic programs, beach operations, and community events. The program coordinator will perform all duties as deemed necessary to achieve the department’s goals and objectives.
Supervision:
Employee works under the general supervision of the Director of Parks & Recreation. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out assignments independently. New or unusual assignments are explained by the director, including suggested work methods. The director reviews work to ensure that it is accurate and that instructions are being followed.
Job Environment:
Numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions govern the work and in some cases, may require additional interpretation. Employee uses judgment to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline to use in a given situation. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or information involved in a particular situation. Errors could result in delay or loss of service, monetary loss, or legal repercussions.
The position has frequent contact with the public in person, in writing, and on the telephone. Other contacts are with other town employees, vendors, and various agencies and officials. The purpose for contact is to respond to inquiries regarding department matters such as financial, personnel, or procurement issues.

Position functions:

Essential Functions:
· Coordinate programs and activities like the summer basketball league and beach operations
· Assist the director with hiring, training, and overseeing seasonal employees
· Staff front office and provide customer service to program participants, staff, and the general public
· Provide administrative program support, to include data entry and registration support
· Prepares brochures, letters, posters, flyers and related communications regarding programs and special events
· Promote interest and provide information regarding recreation programs to community leaders, recreation officials, community service groups, other departments and the general public
· Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as, but not limited to, answering the telephone, email correspondence, running errands, and purchasing supplies
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee works in a moderately noisy setting and is exposed to outdoor weather conditions up to 2/3rd of the time. Employee is required to reach with hands and arms up to 2/3rd of the time, and to stand, walk, sit, talk or listen/hear, use hands, or climb or balance more than 2/3rd of the time. Employee occasionally lifts up to 60 lbs., and seldom lifts up to or more than 100 lbs. Normal vision is required for the position. Equipment operated includes automobile, office machines, and computers.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
· Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
· Knowledge of basic office procedures

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. A degree in Parks & Recreation related field or equivalent experience working in education, recreation, environmental, social or leisure services.
2. At least one year experience in an administrative support position.
3. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
4. Must have the ability to work courteously and effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
5. Possession of a valid Rhode Island State Driver's License.

Ability to:
· Prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little supervision.
· Exercise considerable judgment and tact in contact with public officials and the general public in matters relating to departmental policy and procedures.
