Position Summary

Assists the Mechatronics Faculty and Program Manager by organizing, setting up, assembling and disassembling equipment, supplies, tools, parts, and other materials needed for classroom instruction and lab demonstrations. Maintains mechatronics lab equipment in working order. Assists with program clerical tasks including maintaining department statistics, making copies of handouts, setting up eLearning accounts, entering purchase orders, and more.

Requires basic knowledge of a body of information for maintaining equipment including electronics, mechanics, programmable logic controllers, motors, process control, robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and CNC machines. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to the faculty or program manager for decision or help.

The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, lifting, or reaching; and other activities requiring above average agility and dexterity. The work environment involves moderate risks requiring special safety precautions, such as working around moving parts or machines, high voltage, and possibly irritant chemicals, and may require the use of personal protective equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in maintaining the inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies. Monitors and notifies instructor of stock quantity. Assists with ordering, receiving, setup, and maintenance of materials, equipment, and supplies. Assists with equipment specification, travel forms for instructors, and the purchase order process.
  • Sets up and monitors an equipment maintenance program. Performs periodic inspections and maintenance on a variety of equipment including electrical, mechanical, motor, hydraulic, pneumatic, robotic, and other systems.
  • Assembles and sets up equipment, supplies, tools, and other materials as needed. Moves equipment between campuses, as necessary, which may require pulling a trailer.
  • Assist with clerical tasks such as maintaining a student database, creating classroom signs, making weekly copies of lab handouts, setting up eLearning accounts, opening certification tests, printing certificates, etc.
  • Interface with the public in promotion of the program, giving tours, taking and manning equipment for on- and off-campus events, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned to include business and industry training and/or instruction of non-credit courses related to the manufacturing cluster, maintaining department software, attending meetings, daily cleaning/straightening of labs, submitting facilities work orders, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Instruction and/or President.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk, sit, smell, talk, and hear. The employee must have mobility to move on- and off-campus. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Requires minimum of Associates Degree or equivalent training/work experience/certification in mechatronics or a similar field such as electrical/electronics, manufacturing, mechanical, instrumentation, automation, drafting, machining, etc.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with industrial experience and/or previous maintenance experience in a lab environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with specific experience in maintaining PLCs, industrial robotics, process control systems, and/or CNC machines.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with maintaining Allen-Bradley and Siemens software for PLC and HMI, and/or CNC simulator software.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Requires basic knowledge of electronics, mechanics, programmable logic controllers, motors, process control, robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and CNC machines. Must have knowledge of and comply with College policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complex instructions, correspondence, and memos such as work orders, verbal and written instructions, warning labels, and safety procedures. Ability to read and write at a college level.
  • Requires ability to effectively present information orally and in writing in one-on-one and small group situations to faculty, staff, industry partners, prospective students, and others. Must be able to multi-task and split time between a variety of activities simultaneously, while having follow-through to complete tasks in a timely fashion. Willingness to continually learn new subjects and obtain/maintain industrial certifications is required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in problematic situations. Troubleshooting skills in electronics and mechanics are required. Must be able to communicate with technical support personnel in multiple disciplines in a professional manner to solve problems with equipment.
  • Must have the ability to efficiently use computers, printers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and other standard office equipment. Must have ability to proficiently operate word processing, spreadsheet, and network applications.
  • Requires the ability to safely use a variety of lab equipment including low and high voltage systems, precision measurement tools, electric motors, hydraulic pumps, pneumatic compressors, valves, robots, motor control systems, process control systems, programmable logic controllers, basic hand tools, and other equipment. Requires attention to detail and precision in operation of high-dollar equipment that can be easily damaged if used improperly.
  • Must demonstrate professional and cooperative behaviors when assisting coworkers, customers, and others as needed. Must dress appropriately for situations that may differ on a daily basis, such as business meetings, lab activities, equipment maintenance, etc.
  • Requires discretion in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters.

SALARY:
Salary Schedule E3 04 $38,215-$53,976, based upon the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule to be determined by the applicant’s education and years of applicable experience.
