Position Summary:

The Primary School Principal oversees the teaching and learning, curriculum and instruction, faculty supervision and development, guidance to parents and students, day-to-day operations, and student-based activities and fosters culture and community. The Principal is responsible for planning, supervising, and evaluating the academic growth, character, development, and co-curricular opportunities experienced by students in grades Pre K - 3. In addition, the Principal is charged with consistently meeting accreditation standards for the school as required by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and directly supervises all faculty and personnel of the Primary School.

The principal reports directly to the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Life. The Principal serves on the Principals’ Council, composed of the five school principals and the director of the Transition Program as well as the President’s Woodward Council.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Leads and manages the curricular program of the school to maintain academic and co-curricular programs that support Woodward Academy’s mission and vision. Ensures continuity and consistency of programs. Personally and professionally models school virtues and beliefs.
  • Oversees teaching and learning, along with curriculum design and management. Regularly observes in classrooms and meets with faculty to provide teaching feedback and ongoing evaluation of curriculum design. Provides training on curriculum.
  • Supervises and evaluates the development of faculty. Guides professional development opportunities. Works with Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Life in the recruitment and interviewing of prospective faculty.
  • Acts as the liaison to parents for student learning and curriculum information.
  • Participates in the screening process for prospective students and provides feedback for admissions of diverse, well-qualified students to the program.
  • Manages and implements safety procedures that include periodic fire, tornado, and lockdown drills.

Position Requirements

  • Degree in early childhood education preferred.
  • Advanced degree in educational leadership required.
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience and five years of leadership experience
  • Posses a solid understanding of best practices in early elementary pedagogy and child development.
  • Experience with curriculum and program design.

  • Faculty supervision and evaluation experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to connect authentically and work effectively with all faculty, staff and students, in an atmosphere of trust.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge and enthusiasm for experiential education, character development, educational technology, diversity work, and a commitment to developing the potential of students and faculty.

  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong background in real-life problem-solving and place-based methodologies.
  • Commitment to work cooperatively with administrators, faculty, students, families, in order to maintain a thriving program.
  • Demonstrated project management skills in implementing and assessing programs, managing relationships, and working on diverse teams. Organized and detail-oriented.
  • A strong desire to work in a collaborative learning community, employing a growth mindset and participating in ongoing professional development.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office and G-suite.


The Primary School Principal is a salaried, twelve-month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. EOE
