Phlebotomist / Laboratory Assistant Job at Memorial Hospital and Health Care
Job Summary
Under direct supervision of laboratory assistant supervisor, performs venipuncture's and capillary sticks to obtain an adequate blood specimen on patients, from birth to death. A very high degree of office work and other lab duties as assigned is included in daily schedule. Must reflect mission statement and philosophy of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in daily work habits and contacts.
Qualifications
Education:
High School Graduate or Equivalent required. Required to be PBT (ASCP) after two years. (See training).
Training:
Six to twelve months on the job training required. Within one year of employee hire date, must successfully complete medical terminology and two years be ASCP certified.
Experience:
None required. Six to twelve months experienced as phlebotomist preferred.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The knowledge and techniques in collecting blood specimens using various options. Understanding of sterile techniques to prevent patient harm. Knowledge of regulations of laboratory equipment and supplies. Knowledge of hospital rules and regulations. Being familiar with other departments of the hospital and being able to deal with large variety of people.
Performance Requirements
Responsible For:
A high degree of concentration is needed to avoid mislabeling tubes, sticking the correct patient and collecting supplies. Responsible for decisions that could result in considerable extra cost to hospital or patient.
Physical Demands:
A lot of time is spent climbing stairs, walking, sitting, and standing, never sitting for more than 5-10 minutes. A high degree of touch is needed to determine small, deep and/or unstable veins. Must be able to recognize all colors. Moderate lifting is required. Must be mentally alert.
Special Demands:
Must be dependable, cooperative, and mentally alert. Must be adaptable and willing to perform a variety of tasks assigned. Should have desire to please patient. Willingness to perform repetitive tasks. Must be able to work with all personalities and use tact and judgment in dealing with varying situations. Must have valid operator license and reliable and insured personal transportation for courier travel.
