Overview of position:
Summary:
This position is responsible to perform a range of pathology specimen processing duties that include surgical specimen registration, GYN specimen registration and processing, as well as slide case assembly and delivery to the pathologists.
Essential Duties:
Responsibilities:
- Assists the grossing pathologist or PA in receipt of, and organization of surgical tissue specimens.
- Exemplifies knowledge of surgical specimen accessioning procedures.
- Enters accession numbers, patient and specimen identifiers into computer database.
- Accurately labels specimen containers, requisitions, and tissue cassettes with surgical accession number.
- Exemplifies knowledge of GYN specimen accessioning and processing procedures.
- Processes specimens maintaining specimen integrity according to individual specimen requirements.
- Assembles slides and associated paperwork to send specimens to outside laboratories for consultation.
- Has knowledge of, and assists the department with the regulatory compliance for accrediting organizations including CAP, HFAP, OSHA, and HIPPA.
- Assists with customer service issues by collecting applicable information and directing concerns appropriately.
- Assists with department clerical duties.
- Accurately prepares and distributes memoranda, correspondence, agendas, letters, and reports.
- Accurately reviews billing audit reports.
- Orders supplies, maintains office supply inventory, and submits work orders as necessary.
- Maintains the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
- Performs other functions as assigned.

- High School Degree or GED equivalency.
- Good working knowledge of medical (pathology) terminology.
- Attention to detail, ability to keep detailed and accurate records.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Demonstrated excellence with listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and under pressure in a complex and changing work environment.
