Apple Cupertino, CA

Summary

Posted: Dec 5, 2022
Role Number: 200194354
The Laser Sensing Hardware group designs sensors and illuminators for Apple products, including components of the revolutionary FaceID system and digital crown in Apple Watch Ultra. This multi-disciplinary group of engineers are responsible for architecture, design, and manufacturing development of new sensing solutions. The team is looking for someone who knows semiconductor lasers and is a self-driven go-getter. Experience with photodiodes is a plus. You will specify, develop, and validate new semiconductor components for new sensors.

Key Qualifications

  • Strong devices-physics background, with a solid understanding of semiconductor physics, optical processes in semiconductors, and driver-level analog EE.
  • Strong experience with semiconductor device designs. Design and simulation experience on semiconductor lasers, especially VCSELs and gratings is a strong plus.
  • Experience in a typical programming language (matlab, python, etc) for modeling, simulation, and computation.
  • Experience with one or more commercial device-modeling packages (Crosslight, Photon Design, Comsol, Lumerical, or similar) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with compound semiconductor-device processing (III-V, II-VI, etc) and failure analysis tools.
  • Experience with lab characterization, including laser drivers, optical metrology (spectrometers, oscilloscopes, and free space optics.), and time-resolved measurements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Solid teamwork skills in a highly multi-functional team environment.

Description

In this role, you will lead key areas of introducing a new device: Design and tolerance optical/photonic semiconductor devices for new optical sensors and device technologies. Proof-of-concept simulation/calculation using variety of software tools (e.g. Lumerical, RCWA, Matlab, etc.) to scope new sensing and/or device technology roadmap discussion and development. Product simulation/analysis using a variety of software tools to support engineering validation and characterization. Engage vendors for prototyping and engineering development; drive to successful delivery of the design. Prototype characterization in optical lab to validate the design. Failure mode analysis, root-cause diagnosis, and problem solving. Analyze data to draw conclusions, enhance product design/manufacturability. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Process Engineering, Test Engineering and Reliability Engineering to deliver state-of-the-art sensing solutions. Travel to support design/production/supplier teams as necessary. Business travel to support product development (up to10%) In all of this work, you need to be an effective communicator — both to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present to executive management on key developments / issues.
