Newington Shelter Veterinary Assistant Job at Connecticut Humane Society
The Connecticut Humane Society, is looking for a Shelter Veterinary Assistant in our Newington Shelter. This position is responsible for the daily medical care of any sick animals in the shelter or medical areas including but not limited to: cleaning, provision of daily medicines, deworming, flea and tick treatment, medical observation, provision of adequate food and water, walking, monitoring animals and reporting health or behavior abnormalities, socializing animals and creating and maintaining necessary animal records, performing data entry. Perform animal bathing and basic grooming. Assist with animal intake, evaluation, and treatment. They will also assist our veterinary technicians with prep for all surgical procedures, monitoring patients during prep and surgery, administering fluids, assist with x-ray, provide support therapy to patients in surgery and post-op, and remove and ready the next patient.

Overview: This full time position is benefit eligible. This position is ideal for who is able to deal with different communication styles. We are looking for a creative, customer service oriented individual who can work well within a team. Interested individuals must be able to handle multiple priorities and enjoy a busy environment. This position requires one to have a knowledge of animal handling and medical care as well as have a basic understanding of the different types of companionship animals. This position includes a weekend schedule.

Schedule: Sunday to Thursday, 8:00am to 4:30pm
Requirements
- Education: Associates Degree in animal science or related field.
- Experience: At least 1 year working as a veterinary assistant in a clinic or shelter setting or at least two years as animal care.
- Skills: Ability to perform physically strenuous activities which will require lifting of moderate to heavy weights (up to 40 lbs.),standing and/or bending, pushing brooms and/or mops, and walking and/or controlling dogs and/or cats, use of cleaning solutions and sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Prior experience with animal restraint.
- Technology: Proficiency in computers and on-line medical records
- Skills: Knowledge of animal handling and experience preferred
